Tip: Allow at least 2-3 hours to fully explore. Consider visiting in different seasons for varied beauty. Don't miss the flying geese pond and the Kasumiga-ike pond with the Kotojitoro lantern.
Adjacent to Kenrokuen, discover Kanazawa Castle Park, the sprawling former grounds of the Maeda Clan's castle. While the main keep was lost to fire, impressive reconstructions of gates, turrets, and the vast Hishi Yagura (diamond turret), Gojukken Nagaya (storage building), and Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura (turret and gate) showcase its former grandeur.
Tip: Walk across the beautiful wooden bridge connecting the garden and the castle grounds. The park offers pleasant walks and great photo opportunities.
Step back in time by exploring the Nagamachi Samurai District, where the samurai and their families resided. Walk along narrow, cobbled streets lined with preserved samurai residences, traditional mud walls, and private canals. Visit the Nomura House, a restored samurai residence with a beautiful garden, to glimpse their affluent lifestyle.
Tip: The Nomura House is a must-see for its exquisite garden and detailed interiors. Many other residences are still privately owned, offering a sense of living history.
Experience the charm of Higashi Chaya District, Kanazawa's largest and most famous geisha district. Its beautifully preserved wooden tea houses, where geisha once entertained, create a captivating atmosphere. Some tea houses are now open to the public as museums or cafes.
Tip: Visit the Shima Teahouse or Kaikaro Teahouse (now museums) to explore their interiors and learn about geisha culture. Enjoy green tea or traditional sweets in one of the district's cafes.
For a contrast to Kanazawa's traditional side, explore the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. This highly acclaimed museum is known for its innovative, circular design, open spaces, and interactive contemporary art installations, including Leandro Erlich's famous "Swimming Pool."
Tip: Even if modern art isn't your main interest, the architecture and some of the permanent installations (like the pool) are worth seeing. Check for temporary exhibitions.
