Walk along the magnificent Cardo Maximus, the main north-south thoroughfare of ancient Jerash. This 800-meter-long paved street is lined with hundreds of original columns, still showing the ruts from ancient chariot wheels.
Tip: Imagine the bustling life of the Roman city as you walk down this well-preserved street. Look for the distinct diagonal pattern of the paving stones, designed for better drainage.
Visit the remarkably well-preserved South Theater, built in the 1st century AD. With a seating capacity of around 3,000, it hosted dramatic performances and public meetings. Its acoustics are still impressive; try singing or speaking from the stage!
Tip: Climb to the upper tiers for excellent views of the entire archaeological site and the modern city beyond.
Make the ascent to the Temple of Artemis, dedicated to the patron goddess of Jerash. Though partially ruined, its remaining towering Corinthian columns are incredibly impressive, exuding a sense of grandeur and providing commanding views over the city.
Tip: Guides often demonstrate the slight movement of the columns by placing a spoon under them, showcasing the engineering prowess of the Romans.
If available during your visit, catch the Roman Army and Chariot Race Re-enactment (RACR) show at the Hippodrome. This lively performance recreates ancient chariot races and gladiator fights, bringing history to life.
