The "Pompeii of the East" Magnificence of Roman Jordan

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Jerash, often hailed as the "Pompeii of the East," is an extraordinary archaeological site in northern Jordan, boasting some of the best-preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy. Once a thriving city of the Decapolis League, Jerash (ancient Gerasa) flourished under Roman rule, becoming a significant trading hub and a testament to imperial Roman urban planning. Its history spans over 6,500 years, with evidence of human occupation from the Neolithic period through Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic eras.
While Jerash is not a cruise port, it is a quintessential land-based excursion for those exploring Jordan, often visited as a day trip from Amman or as part of extended tours that might link with cruises calling at Aqaba on the Red Sea. A visit to Jerash transports you back to its golden age, allowing you to wander through grand colonnaded streets, imposing temples, impressive theaters, and spacious public squares, revealing a harmonious blend of Greco-Roman and ancient Oriental traditions that shaped this remarkable ancient city.
Begin your exploration by passing through Hadrian's Arch, a monumental triumphal arch built to commemorate the visit of Emperor Hadrian in AD 129-130. This grand gateway marks the southern entrance to the ancient city and sets the stage for the wonders within.
Tip: Take a moment to appreciate the scale and the intricate details of this impressive structure, which once stood even taller.
Step into the iconic Oval Plaza, a uniquely shaped public space that is one of Jerash's most distinctive features. Surrounded by 56 Ionic columns, this vast plaza served as a central gathering point and marketplace in ancient times.
Tip: The acoustics are surprisingly good in the center of the plaza; try speaking softly and hear it carry. This is a popular spot for photos.
Walk along the magnificent Cardo Maximus, the main north-south thoroughfare of ancient Jerash. This 800-meter-long paved street is lined with hundreds of original columns, still showing the ruts from ancient chariot wheels.
Tip: Imagine the bustling life of the Roman city as you walk down this well-preserved street. Look for the distinct diagonal pattern of the paving stones, designed for better drainage.
Visit the remarkably well-preserved South Theater, built in the 1st century AD. With a seating capacity of around 3,000, it hosted dramatic performances and public meetings. Its acoustics are still impressive; try singing or speaking from the stage!
Tip: Climb to the upper tiers for excellent views of the entire archaeological site and the modern city beyond.
Make the ascent to the Temple of Artemis, dedicated to the patron goddess of Jerash. Though partially ruined, its remaining towering Corinthian columns are incredibly impressive, exuding a sense of grandeur and providing commanding views over the city.
Tip: Guides often demonstrate the slight movement of the columns by placing a spoon under them, showcasing the engineering prowess of the Romans.
If available during your visit, catch the Roman Army and Chariot Race Re-enactment (RACR) show at the Hippodrome. This lively performance recreates ancient chariot races and gladiator fights, bringing history to life.
Tip: Check the schedule in advance, as these shows are not daily and are highly seasonal. It's a fun and engaging way to experience Roman entertainment.
