Overview
The Isle of Skye is the largest and arguably the most iconic island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, renowned globally for its awe-inspiring, dramatic landscapes that look straight out of a fantasy novel. From the rugged peaks of the Cuillin mountains to the otherworldly rock formations of the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr, Skye's scenery is a tapestry of ancient volcanoes, geological wonders, and a deeply ingrained sense of mythical lore.
Connected to mainland Scotland by a bridge, Skye is easily accessible, yet it retains a wild and remote feel. It's a magnet for hikers, photographers, and adventurers drawn to its unique natural features, abundant wildlife (including eagles, deer, and marine mammals), and vibrant Gaelic culture. Despite its popularity, Skye offers endless opportunities for exploration and immersion in Scotland's raw.
The Old Man of Storr is one of Skye's most famous landmarks, a large, pinnacled rock formation that is part of the Trotternish Ridge. A relatively short but steep hike leads to incredible viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape, including the coastline and the mainland.
Tip: Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and for the best light for photography. Wear sturdy hiking boots as the path can be muddy and uneven.
Venture to the Quiraing, a spectacular landslip on the eastern face of the Trotternish Ridge, characterized by its dramatic pinnacles, hidden plateaus, and stunning cliff faces. It's a truly otherworldly landscape perfect for hiking and photography.
Tip: The full Quiraing loop walk is challenging but rewarding. Even a shorter stroll to viewpoints offers incredible scenery. Be prepared for strong winds.
Discover the enchanting Fairy Pools at Glen Brittle, a series of crystal-clear, cold pools and waterfalls along the River Brittle. These natural cascades, set against the backdrop of the Black Cuillin mountains, are popular for wild swimming (if you dare!) and photography.
Tip: The walk to the pools is relatively easy but can be boggy; waterproof footwear is advised. Arrive early to find parking and avoid crowds.
Spend time in Portree, Skye's charming capital and main town. Its iconic, brightly painted houses lining the sheltered harbour are a photographer's delight. Enjoy fresh seafood, browse the local shops, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
Tip: Portree is a great base for exploring the island and offers a good selection of restaurants and services.
Visit Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod, and continuously inhabited by the same family for 800 years. Explore its historic rooms, admire ancient clan treasures (including the famous Fairy Flag), and wander through its beautiful formal gardens and woodlands.
Tip: The castle offers boat trips to see the seal colony in Loch Dunvegan. Check opening times, as it's seasonal.
Numerous boat trips depart from various points on Skye. Opt for a wildlife tour to spot White-tailed Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles, seals, otters, dolphins, and even basking sharks or minke whales (seasonal). Alternatively, take a boat trip into Loch Coruisk (accessible from Elgol) for unparalleled views of the majestic Black Cuillin mountains from their base.
Tip: Book boat trips in advance, especially during peak season. Dress warmly and waterproof, as conditions at sea can be chilly.
