Overview
The Isles of Scilly are a stunning archipelago located approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, England. Comprising five inhabited islands (St. Mary's, Tresco, St. Martin's, St. Agnes, and Bryher) and over 140 uninhabited rocks and islets, Scilly is renowned for its extraordinary natural beauty, subtropical climate, and pristine environment. Thanks to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, the islands boast a mild climate that allows exotic plants to flourish, creating a unique landscape more akin to the Mediterranean than mainland Britain.
With dazzling white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a relaxed, unhurried pace of life, the Isles of Scilly offer a truly unique island escape. They are a haven for diverse wildlife, particularly seabirds, and offer a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle, providing opportunities for island hopping, water sports, and simply unwinding in breathtaking surroundings.
The best way to experience the Isles of Scilly is to island hop between the five inhabited islands and explore some of the larger uninhabited ones. Regular inter-island boats connect St. Mary's (the main island) to Tresco, St. Martin's, St. Agnes, and Bryher, each offering its own unique charm and attractions.
Tip: Check the daily boat board at St. Mary's harbour for times and destinations. Each island offers a distinct character to discover.
Visit the world-famous Abbey Garden on Tresco, a horticultural marvel that thrives in Scilly's subtropical climate. Here, you'll find a stunning collection of over 20,000 exotic plants from 80 different countries, many of which cannot be grown outdoors anywhere else in the UK. The garden also houses the Valhalla Museum, displaying figureheads from shipwrecks.
Tip: Allow at least half a day to explore the extensive gardens. There's a café on site.
The Isles of Scilly are famed for their beautiful white-sand beaches and clear, turquoise waters that rival those of the Caribbean. Popular spots include Porthcressa Beach on St. Mary's, Appletree Bay on Tresco, and Lawrence's Bay on St. Martin's. Enjoy sunbathing, swimming, or simply soaking in the serene coastal views.
Tip: Even in peak season, you can often find secluded coves and quiet stretches of beach.
The calm and remarkably clear waters around the islands are perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Explore rocky coves, observe diverse marine life (including seals, fish, and occasional dolphins), and enjoy the unique perspective of the islands from the water.
Tip: Equipment can be rented on St. Mary's and Tresco. Guided kayak tours are also available.
Take a dedicated wildlife boat trip to see the abundant marine life. You'll likely encounter colonies of Grey Seals (often inquisitive and playful around boats), and various seabirds, including puffins (seasonal, typically April-July), cormorants, shags, and various gulls. Trips often visit uninhabited islets like the Eastern Isles.
Tip: Several boat operators offer wildlife tours from St. Mary's and other islands. Bring binoculars and a camera.
Each island offers beautiful coastal paths that lead to dramatic viewpoints, secluded bays, and fascinating ancient sites. Discover Bronze Age burial chambers, Iron Age forts, and old lighthouses (like the iconic Bishop Rock Lighthouse, which can be viewed from boat trips).
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes. The paths are generally well-maintained, but some sections can be uneven. Maps are readily available.
