Overview
The Isle of Mull is the second largest of Scotland's Inner Hebridean islands, renowned for its diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, and charming coastal communities. Tip: The pier is a great place to watch fishing boats and possibly spot seals or otters. Don't miss the award-winning fish and chips from The Fisherman's Pier van.
Mull is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Take a dedicated wildlife tour (land or boat-based) to maximize your chances of spotting White-tailed Sea Eagles (sea eagles) and Golden Eagles soaring overhead. Keep an eye out for otters along the coastlines of sea lochs, and red deer in the moors. Marine tours often reveal seals, porpoises, dolphins, and even minke whales in the surrounding waters.
Tip: Many guided tours are available from Tobermory and other points, significantly increasing your chances of sightings. Binoculars are essential.
Perched dramatically on a rocky headland overlooking the Sound of Mull, Duart Castle is the ancestral home of Clan MacLean, with a history spanning over 700 years. Explore its dungeons, great hall, and museum, and enjoy panoramic views from its ramparts.
Tip: The castle is open seasonally (check dates). It's a fantastic example of a well-preserved Scottish castle.
Embark on an unforgettable boat trip to the uninhabited Isle of Staffa, famous for its incredible Fingal's Cave. This geological marvel features massive, hexagonally jointed basalt columns, formed by ancient volcanic activity, creating a natural cathedral with amazing acoustics. Many tours combine Staffa with visits to the Treshnish Isles, particularly Lunga, for its large Puffin colonies (seasonal, April-July).
Tip: Tours depart from various points on Mull (e.g., Fionnphort, Ulva Ferry, Tobermory). Check weather conditions, as landings can be dependent on calm seas.
Mull boasts several breathtaking white-sand beaches that often evoke images of the Caribbean, especially on a sunny day. Calgary Bay on the west coast is particularly famous, offering a wide crescent of sand perfect for relaxing, swimming (if you're brave!), or exploring the Calgary Art in Nature trail nearby. Other beautiful beaches include Langamull Beach (known as "Mull Caribbean") and the pink granite shores of Fidden Beach.

For the adventurous, climb Ben More, Mull's only Munro (a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet/914 meters), for truly spectacular views across the island and beyond. For less strenuous options, explore the diverse walking trails through forests, along lochs, or to unique geological features like the Carsaig Arches or MacCulloch's Fossil Tree (requires a longer hike or boat access).
