Overview
The Isle of May is a small, enchanting island located at the mouth of the Firth of Forth, approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) off the coast of mainland Scotland. Owned and managed by NatureScot as a National Nature Reserve, it is globally renowned as one of the most important breeding grounds for seabirds in the UK, particularly famous for its vast colonies of Atlantic Puffins.
Beyond its incredible avian spectacles, the Isle of May boasts a rich and varied history stretching back thousands of years. It was the site of one of Scotland's earliest Christian churches, a significant pilgrimage destination in the Middle Ages, and home to the country's first lighthouse. With dramatic cliffs on its west side and a gentler slope to the east, the island offers a captivating blend of natural wonder and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and history buffs alike.
From April to July, the Isle of May is teeming with Atlantic Puffins, making it one of the best places in the UK to observe these charismatic "sea parrots." They can be seen waddling around their burrows, flying with beaks full of sandeels, and bobbing on the waves.
Tip: June and early July are generally the best months for peak puffin numbers. Stay on the designated paths to avoid disturbing their nests.
Beyond puffins, the island hosts an internationally important breeding colony of over a quarter of a million seabirds during the summer months. You'll witness incredible numbers of Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Shags, and various gulls nesting on the towering cliffs.
Tip: Bring binoculars for detailed observation of the cliff-nesting birds. The cacophony of sound from the "bird cities" is an unforgettable experience.
The Isle of May is home to a resident population of Grey Seals and Common Seals, which can be seen lounging on the rocks and beaches, especially around Kirkhaven harbour. They are present all year round, with pupping season for Grey Seals occurring in autumn.
Tip: Seals are often curious and can be seen from the boat trip as well as from certain vantage points on the island.
Explore the island's iconic Lighthouse, built by Robert Stevenson in 1816, resembling a small castle. This was Scotland's first permanently manned light beacon, succeeding a dangerous coal-fired brazier from 1636. While no longer staffed (automated in 1989), it remains a prominent landmark.
Tip: Learn about its history at the visitor center or from the island rangers. While climbing to the top may not always be possible, the external views are impressive.
Discover the island's deep historical roots, dating back to the 7th century. Look for the fragmented remains of a 12th-century monastery (St. Adrian's Chapel) and learn about the island's past as a significant pilgrimage site.
Tip: The island's visitor center and NatureScot rangers provide excellent insights into its human history, including tales of monks, Vikings, and smugglers.
The Isle of May offers a network of paths that crisscross the island, providing incredible opportunities for scenic walks and wildlife photography. From dramatic cliff-top views to sheltered coves, every turn offers a new perspective.
Tip: Stick to the paths to protect fragile nesting sites. Be prepared for rapidly changing Scottish weather – bring sturdy shoes, warm layers, and waterproofs.
