Overview
Puerto Egas, located on the western coast of Isla Santiago (Santiago Island) in James Bay, is a captivating visitor site known for its dramatic black sand beaches, diverse volcanic landscapes, and abundant wildlife. Named after Hector Egas, who attempted to mine salt here in the 1960s, the site also holds historical significance, having been visited by Charles Darwin in 1835.
The area is characterized by unique geological formations, including lava flows, eroded tuff cones, and tidal pools carved from the volcanic shoreline. These features create a striking contrast with the vibrant marine life and diverse bird species that inhabit the area, making Puerto Egas a popular destination for hiking, wildlife observation, and snorkeling.
Puerto Egas offers an easy to moderate hiking experience along its distinctive black sand beach and rugged volcanic shoreline. The trail, which can be uneven in parts due to basaltic lava, provides excellent opportunities to observe the unique geological formations and coastal wildlife.
Tip: Wear sturdy hiking shoes as the terrain can be rocky and uneven. The walk typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
One of the main highlights of Puerto Egas is the chance to get up close with Galápagos fur seals. These playful creatures often seek shade in the rocky grottos and tidal pools along the coast, offering fantastic viewing opportunities. You can observe them bathing in the sun or swimming gracefully in the water.
Tip: Keep a respectful distance and observe these animals in their natural habitat. This is considered one of the best spots in the Galápagos to see fur seals.
The coastal trail passes numerous tidal pools teeming with marine life. Look closely to spot a variety of creatures such as Sally Lightfoot Crabs (their bright red color stands out against the black lava), anemones, sea urchins, and various small fish. At low tide, you might even spot octopi or moray eels.
Tip: Take your time to observe the intricate ecosystems within these pools.
The calm, clear waters off the black sand beach are excellent for snorkeling. You can swim with Galápagos sea lions, green sea turtles, and various colorful reef fish. Lucky snorkelers might also spot rays or even Galápagos penguins.
Tip: Wetsuits are often provided and recommended for comfort, as the water temperature can vary.
For those interested in the island's history, an optional longer inland hike (approximately 4 miles round trip) leads to the old salt mines. This trail takes you to a volcanic crater that contains a seasonal saltwater lagoon. During the dry season, the lagoon dries up, revealing salt deposits that were commercially exploited in the 1920s and 1960s.
Tip: This hike is more strenuous and can be hot. Bring extra water and be prepared for a longer trek. While you cannot go down into the crater, you can observe it from the rim.
Puerto Egas is a great spot for birdwatching. Along the shoreline, you can see various shorebirds like American Oystercatchers, Lava Herons, and Yellow-crowned Night Herons hunting for food. If you take the trail to the salt mine lagoon, you might spot Galápagos Flamingos and White-cheeked Pintail Ducks. Galápagos Hawks are also frequently observed circling overhead.
Tip: Binoculars will enhance your birdwatching experience.
