Take a trip into the highlands of Santa Cruz to see Galápagos giant tortoises in their wild, natural habitat. Numerous private ranches and the El Chato Tortoise Reserve offer opportunities to walk among these magnificent, ancient reptiles as they graze in the grassy fields. You can also explore vast lava tunnels in this area.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain can be muddy. This is a truly iconic Galápagos experience.
Hike (or take a water taxi) to Tortuga Bay, a stunningly beautiful white-sand beach known for its strong waves (Playa Brava, suitable for surfing) and its calm, crystal-clear lagoon (Playa Mansa). The lagoon is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking, often sharing the water with marine iguanas, white-tipped reef sharks (harmless), and rays.
Tip: The walk is about 45 minutes each way. Bring water, sunscreen, and proper swimming attire. No food or drinks are sold there.
Wander along the lively waterfront of Puerto Ayora. Observe sea lions lounging on benches or boats, pelicans diving for fish, and marine iguanas basking on the docks. Explore the town's shops, art galleries, and diverse restaurants serving fresh seafood.
Tip: Enjoy a meal at one of the "kioskos" (street food stalls) on Charles Binford Street in the evenings for fresh, affordable seafood.
Take a water taxi across the harbor and a short walk to Las Grietas, a dramatic volcanic fissure filled with brackish water (a mix of fresh and saltwater) that's perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The crystal-clear waters allow you to see the unique rock formations beneath the surface.
Tip: Wear water shoes as the path can be rocky. It's a popular spot, so try to go early or late to avoid crowds.
Santa Cruz is the best base for day trips to other central islands like North Seymour (famous for blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds), Bartolomé (iconic Pinnacle Rock and penguins), Plazas Island (land iguanas and sea lions), or Santa Fe (endemic land iguanas). These trips offer diverse wildlife and landscapes.
Tip: Book day tours in advance through reputable operators in Puerto Ayora. Tours usually include lunch and snorkeling.
