Overview
Isla Isabela, the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago, is a land of dramatic volcanic landscapes and incredible biodiversity. Tagus Cove (Caleta Tagus), located on the northwestern side of Isabela, is a historically significant site that once served as a popular anchorage for pirates, whalers, and buccaneers. Its name likely comes from a British warship, HMS Tagus, which visited the cove in 1814.
Today, Tagus Cove is a fascinating visitor site, offering a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. The area is characterized by its steep volcanic cliffs, a saltwater lagoon, and unique geological formations. It's an excellent place to observe a variety of wildlife, including Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, and marine iguanas, all set against a backdrop of stark, beautiful volcanic scenery. The site provides a glimpse into both the natural and human history of the Galápagos.
A dry landing at Tagus Cove leads to a trail that ascends to a spectacular viewpoint. From here, you'll get panoramic views of Tagus Cove itself, the saltwater Darwin Lake (a tuff cone crater lake), and the vast lava flows of Isabela Island.
Tip: The hike is relatively easy but involves some uphill sections. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
Tagus Cove is one of the best places in the Galápagos to spot the endemic Galápagos penguin and the unique flightless cormorant. These birds are often seen swimming in the cove or resting on the rocks along the shoreline.
Tip: Keep your eyes peeled, as both species are relatively small and can be elusive. Your guide will help you spot them.
The calm, protected waters of Tagus Cove are ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. You can paddle along the cliffs, observing marine iguanas, sea turtles, and various fish species. Snorkeling offers opportunities to swim with playful sea lions and observe the underwater volcanic formations.
Tip: Kayaking provides a unique perspective of the cove's geology and wildlife from the water level. Wetsuits are often provided by tour operators.
Along the cliffs of Tagus Cove, there's a unique "graffiti wall" where sailors from past centuries carved the names of their ships and dates. This historical artifact offers a tangible connection to the human history of the Galápagos.
Tip: Your guide will point out the most prominent carvings and explain their significance.
Large numbers of marine iguanas are found basking on the black lava rocks around the cove. You'll also see other seabirds like Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, and pelicans.
Tip: Observe the marine iguanas' behavior, such as their characteristic "sneezing" to expel excess salt.
The geological features of Tagus Cove are fascinating. Darwin Lake, a saltwater lake within a tuff cone, is a prime example of the volcanic origins of the islands. Your guide will explain how these unique formations were created.
Tip: The contrast between the dark volcanic rock and the turquoise waters of the cove and lake makes for stunning photographs.
