Overview
Isla Bartolomé (Bartholomew Island in English) is a small, uninhabited volcanic islet located just off the east coast of Santiago Island in the Galápagos archipelago. Despite its small size, it is arguably one of the most iconic and frequently photographed islands in the Galápagos, primarily due to its striking Pinnacle Rock – an eroded volcanic cone that rises dramatically from the ocean.
Bartolomé offers a surreal, almost lunar landscape of red, orange, green, and black volcanic formations, a testament to its relatively young geological age. It's a key destination for visitors seeking breathtaking panoramic views, excellent snorkeling opportunities with diverse marine life (including the famous Galápagos penguins), and a fascinating insight into the volcanic origins and pioneer vegetation of the islands.
Embark on the iconic hike to the summit viewpoint of Isla Bartolomé. A well-maintained wooden boardwalk and staircase (372 steps) leads to the peak, offering a spectacular 360-degree panorama of Pinnacle Rock, the two crescent-shaped beaches, the black lava flows of Santiago Island, and other distant islands.
Tip: The climb can be hot, so bring water and wear a hat. The views are truly postcard-perfect and one of the best photo opportunities in the Galápagos.
Descend to the golden sand beach at the base of Pinnacle Rock, where you can enjoy fantastic snorkeling. The cool, clear waters are home to a vibrant array of marine life, including colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, reef sharks, and most famously, a small colony of Galápagos penguins.
Tip: This is one of the best places in the archipelago for a chance to swim alongside penguins. Sea lions are also often playful companions here. Wetsuits are often provided by tour operators due to the cooler water.
Beyond the panoramic view, take time to appreciate Pinnacle Rock from the beach level. This distinctive volcanic formation is a geological marvel and a natural landmark of the Galápagos. You might see penguins or sea lions resting on its lower ledges.
Tip: Many tours include a dinghy ride around Pinnacle Rock for different perspectives and wildlife viewing.
During your hike to the summit, pay attention to the unique volcanic formations (spatter cones, tuff cones, lava flows) and the resilient pioneer plants like the Tiquilia nesiotica and lava cactus that are among the first to colonize new volcanic ground.
Tip: Your naturalist guide will provide fascinating insights into the geology and botany of this young island.
From January to March, the golden sand beach near Pinnacle Rock is a nesting site for green sea turtles. While swimming is generally done on the northern beach, the southern beach (no swimming allowed) is where turtles often come to nest.
Tip: Respect all wildlife and nesting areas. Your guide will ensure you observe from a safe and respectful distance.
Even from the land and around the coastline, keep an eye out for various marine birds. Blue-footed boobies can be seen diving, while frigatebirds and pelicans soar overhead. Galápagos hawks may also be spotted.
Tip: Bring binoculars to get a closer look at the birds perching on the cliffs or fishing in the channel.
