Overview
Ísafjörður (pronounced "EE-sa-fyord-ur") is the largest town in the remote and stunning Westfjords region of Iceland. Nestled at the head of a magnificent fjord (Skutulsfjörður, which branches off Ísafjarðardjúp), surrounded by towering, flat-topped mountains that plunge dramatically into the sea, Ísafjörður is a charming and picturesque hub. It serves as the unofficial "capital" of the Westfjords, a region celebrated for its raw, untouched natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and tranquil atmosphere.
The town itself boasts a rich history, evident in its well-preserved 18th-century timber houses in the "Neðstikaupstaður" area, reflecting its past as a significant fishing and trading post. Today, Ísafjörður is a vital center for local commerce, culture, and especially, outdoor adventure, offering unparalleled access to hiking, kayaking, birdwatching, and exploring the unique landscapes of Iceland's most isolated peninsula.
Wander through Neðstikaupstaður, Ísafjörður's oldest and best-preserved part, featuring charming 18th-century timber houses that reflect the town's fishing and trading past. Visit the Westfjords Heritage Museum (Byggðasafn Vestfjarða), which showcases the area's maritime history, folk art, and the daily life of its inhabitants.
Tip: Many of the old houses now host cafes or art galleries. The museum provides excellent context for the region's unique history.
Embark on a popular and relatively easy hike up to Naustahvilft, also known as the "Troll's Seat," a naturally occurring amphitheater in the mountainside above the town. The trail offers increasingly spectacular panoramic views of Ísafjörður, Skutulsfjörður, and the surrounding fjords.
Tip: The hike takes about 1-2 hours round trip. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The views from the top are exceptional.
Experience the stunning beauty of the fjord from a different perspective by taking a kayaking tour from Ísafjörður. Glide through the calm, clear waters, marvel at the towering cliffs, and look for seals, seabirds, and perhaps even whales.
Tip: Several local operators offer guided kayaking tours suitable for all skill levels, from short trips to multi-day expeditions.
Embark on a scenic boat trip to Vigur Island, a private island famous for its incredible birdlife. Witness large colonies of puffins (in summer), eider ducks, Arctic terns, and black guillemots. You can also see Iceland's only working windmill and an ancient post office.
Tip: This is a fantastic excursion for nature lovers and birdwatchers. Tours typically run from May to August. Dress warmly and bring binoculars.
Take a short drive (or bus) to the nearby fishing village of Bolungarvík and visit the Ósvör Maritime Museum. This outdoor museum features a reconstructed 19th-century fishing station, including a salt house, a fish drying hut, and a fisherman's hut, offering a glimpse into the harsh realities of traditional Icelandic fishing life.
Tip: The site is often staffed by a guide in traditional attire, adding to the authenticity. The drive to Bolungarvík itself is very scenic.
Savor the local flavors of Ísafjörður. As a fishing town, fresh seafood is a must-try. Explore the cozy cafes and restaurants, sampling local specialties like fish stew (plokkfiskur) or freshly baked pastries.
Tip: The town has a growing culinary scene. Look for restaurants that highlight local ingredients and traditional recipes.
