A dramatic gorge on the Danube River.

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
The Iron Gates (Romanian: Porțile de Fier, Serbian: Đerdapska klisura) is a spectacular and historic gorge on the Danube River, forming a natural border between Serbia and Romania. Often considered the most dramatic and scenic section of the entire Danube, it's a sequence of four narrow gorges and three wider basins, stretching for approximately 134 kilometers (83 miles) where the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains converge.
Once a treacherous passage of rapids and submerged rocks that challenged even the most experienced mariners, the construction of two massive hydroelectric dams (Iron Gate I and Iron Gate II) in the latter half of the 20th century transformed this section of the river. The dams created large reservoirs, submerged rapids, and significantly raised the water level, making the passage smooth and navigable for large river cruise ships and cargo vessels. Cruising through the Iron Gates offers an unparalleled blend of breathtaking natural beauty, impressive engineering, and ancient history,
The most iconic and dramatic part of the Iron Gates are the Great Kazan (Cazanele Mari) and Small Kazan (Cazanele Mici) gorges. Here, the Danube narrows significantly to just 150-200 meters wide, with towering, sheer rock cliffs rising hundreds of meters above the water on both sides. The feeling of the ship gliding through this majestic, fjord-like landscape is truly awe-inspiring.
Tip: Be on the deck, ideally with a camera, to fully appreciate the scale and beauty of the "Boilers" (Cazanele).
On the Romanian side, keep an eye out for the immense rock sculpture of Decebalus, the last king of Dacia. This impressive carving, standing 40 meters (130 feet) high, is the tallest rock sculpture in Europe and commemorates the Dacian king who famously resisted Roman conquest.
Tip: The sculpture is best viewed from the river. Your cruise director will likely point it out as you pass.
On the Serbian side, directly opposite the Decebalus sculpture, look for the subtle but historically significant Tabula Traiana. This ancient Roman memorial plaque, carved into the rock face, commemorates Emperor Trajan's ambitious military road built through the gorge in the 2nd century AD during his campaigns against the Dacians.
Tip: It's small and often hard to spot, so listen to your onboard commentary or look for guidance from the crew.
Experience the engineering marvel of the Iron Gates I and II hydroelectric power plants and their locks. Your river cruise ship will pass through these massive locks, which raise or lower the vessel over significant elevation changes, allowing navigation through the dammed sections of the river.
Tip: This is a fascinating operational experience. Head to an observation deck to watch the lock gates open and close and feel your ship being raised or lowered.
At the Serbian entrance to the wider gorge system (closer to Belgrade), you'll often see the medieval Golubac Fortress (Golubačka Tvrđava). Perched dramatically on cliffs overlooking the Danube, this well-preserved fortress has a long and turbulent history and is a striking sight.
Tip: Some shore excursions from Belgrade might offer a closer visit to the fortress itself.
The Serbian side of the Iron Gates is protected as Đerdap National Park, while the Romanian side is Porțile de Fier Natural Park. Cruising through this region allows you to appreciate the vast wilderness, dense forests, and diverse flora and fauna that inhabit these dramatic landscapes.
Tip: Enjoy the fresh air and listen for bird calls as you pass through. This is truly a nature lover's paradise.
