Overview
Innvikfjorden is a picturesque arm of the larger Nordfjord, one of Norway's most beautiful and diverse fjords, located in Vestland county. This tranquil inlet stretches for approximately 4.5 kilometers, winding its way through a stunning landscape of steep, lush green mountains, cascading waterfalls, and traditional Norwegian villages nestled along its shores. The fjord is named after the village of Innvik, a charming, sleepy community with roots dating back to the 19th century.
Innvikfjorden offers a quintessential Norwegian fjord experience, characterized by calm, shimmering waters reflecting the dramatic scenery. While not a bustling city port, it serves as a serene gateway to some of the region's most iconic natural attractions, including glaciers, panoramic viewpoints, and opportunities for hiking and other outdoor pursuits. It's a place where the sheer strength of nature, carved over millennia by glaciers, is ever-present.
The primary activity for many visitors, especially those on cruise ships, is the scenic cruise through Innvikfjorden itself. Enjoy breathtaking views from the deck as your ship glides through the calm waters, surrounded by towering peaks, a verdant tapestry of forests, and the occasional glimpse of traditional farmsteads.
Tip: Bring your camera! Find a spot on deck or on your balcony for unobstructed views. Look out for local wildlife like seals and seabirds.
From Olden, the village at the end of Innvikfjorden, take an excursion to the famous Briksdal Glacier. This impressive arm of the Jostedal Glacier (Europe's largest mainland glacier) can be reached by a scenic walk or a "Troll Car" ride, leading you close to the stunning blue ice formations.
Tip: This is one of the most popular excursions from Olden. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for changing weather conditions near the glacier.
Experience one of Norway's most spectacular aerial ropeways, the Loen Skylift. From Loen (a short drive from Olden), this gondola takes you up Mt. Hoven (1,011 meters / 3,317 feet) in just minutes, providing panoramic 210-degree views of the fjord, glaciers, and mountains. At the top, there's a restaurant and a network of hiking trails.
Tip: The views are incredible, making it a fantastic photo opportunity. Trails at the top range from easy strolls to more challenging hikes.
Wander through Olden, the charming village nestled at the end of Innvikfjorden. It's a peaceful hub with a picturesque church, local shops, and cafes. It serves as the starting point for many excursions into the surrounding natural beauty.
Tip: Enjoy a leisurely stroll, soak in the quiet atmosphere, and perhaps sample some local delicacies.
For active visitors, the areas around Innvikfjorden and Nordfjord offer excellent opportunities for kayaking on the tranquil fjord waters or hiking through the lush forests and mountain trails. Several routes cater to different fitness levels, providing incredible views.
Tip: Local tour operators in Olden or Innvik may offer guided kayaking tours or provide maps for hiking trails. Always check weather conditions before heading out.
Take a scenic drive into the Lodalen Valley, a breathtaking and somber valley known for its dramatic landscapes and the history of past rockslide disasters. Explore Lake Loen (Loenvatnet), with its distinctive emerald green water, and the Kjenndal Glacier at its end. Boat rides on the lake are also possible.
Tip: This valley offers incredibly dramatic scenery and a profound sense of natural power and resilience.
