Overview
The Îles du Salut (Islands of Salvation) is a small archipelago of three volcanic islands – Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph, and the infamous Île du Diable (Devil's Island) – located approximately 11 kilometers (6 nautical miles) off the coast of French Guiana. These islands are globally recognized for their dark past as a notorious French penal colony, operating from 1852 to 1953, where prisoners were sent for various crimes, including political dissent.
Despite their grim history, the islands today offer a compelling and unique experience. They are covered in lush tropical vegetation, providing a stark contrast to the haunting prison ruins, and are home to a surprising array of wildlife, including monkeys, agoutis, and diverse bird species. The Îles du Salut are a fascinating blend of historical reflection and vibrant natural beauty, making them a significant attraction for visitors to French Guiana.
Île Royale is the largest and most accessible of the islands, serving as the administrative center of the former penal colony. Wander through the remarkably preserved crumbling prison buildings, including cells, the hospital, and administrative quarters. The "Discipline Block" and its solitary confinement cells are particularly poignant.
Tip: Allow ample time to explore and reflect on the history. Informational plaques provide context. The paths can be uneven, so wear comfortable shoes.
Housed in the former wardens' mess hall on Île Royale, the museum offers a deeper insight into the brutal history of the penal colony. It displays artifacts, photographs, and documents from the era, detailing the lives of the prisoners and the administration of the islands.
Tip: The museum helps contextualize the ruins and provides a comprehensive understanding of the prison system.
While direct access to the notorious Île du Diable (Devil's Island) is generally restricted due to dangerous currents, you can get clear and often poignant views from various points on Île Royale. This was where political prisoners, most famously Alfred Dreyfus, were held in isolation.
Tip: Bring binoculars for a closer look at the infamous structures on Devil's Island from the viewpoints on Île Royale.
Take a short boat transfer from Île Royale to Île Saint-Joseph, known for its solitary confinement cells ("réclusions"). This island is quieter and more overgrown, offering an eerie yet powerful atmosphere where nature is reclaiming the former prison structures.
Tip: Conditions on Saint-Joseph were particularly severe. Exploring these ruins provides a different, more isolated perspective on the penal colony's harshness. Access may depend on local conditions.
Despite the islands' history, they are now a vibrant haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for monkeys (such as Capuchin and Saki monkeys), agoutis (large rodents), iguanas, and a variety of colorful tropical birds and even peacocks roaming freely. The surrounding waters also host dolphins, whales, and sea turtles.
Tip: Wildlife is often visible, especially around the former prison grounds on Île Royale. Remember not to feed the animals.
On Île Royale, take a refreshing dip in the "Convict Pool" (Piscine des Baigneurs), a natural tidal pool enclosed by rocks, once used by guards and their families. This provides a safe swimming area. Some small, rocky beaches also exist on the islands, particularly on Île Saint-Joseph (near the cemetery) for a quiet swim.
Tip: The "Convict Pool" offers a unique historical touch to a cool down. Be mindful of tides and wear water shoes for rocky areas.
