A remote island once part of a French penal colony.

Overview
Île Royale (pronounced "Eel Roy-YAL") is the largest of the three islands that make up the Îles du Salut (Islands of Salvation) archipelago, located off the coast of French Guiana in South America. While its infamous neighbor, Île du Diable (Devil's Island), is the most well-known, Île Royale served as the administrative center and primary processing point for the brutal French penal colony from 1852 to 1953.
Today, Île Royale offers a stark yet compelling journey into history, with remarkably preserved ruins of the prison system. Beyond its somber past, the island is a tropical paradise, covered in lush vegetation and home to a surprising array of wildlife, including monkeys, agoutis, and a diverse bird population, making it a unique blend of historical reflection and natural beauty.
Wander through the extensive ruins of the penal colony on Île Royale. Visit the former administrative buildings, the prison hospital, the wardens' quarters, and various cell blocks. The "Discipline Block" with its solitary confinement cells is particularly chilling.
Tip: Allow ample time to explore and read the informational plaques, which provide context to the grim history. The atmosphere is very evocative.
Housed in the former wardens' mess hall, the small museum on Île Royale provides further historical context to the penal colony, displaying artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the prisoners' lives and the administration of the islands.
Tip: The museum helps to put the ruins into perspective and understand the conditions of the prisoners.
Take a scenic walk up to the lighthouse on the island for panoramic views of Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph, and Île du Diable, as well as the surrounding ocean. Nearby, visit the old wardens' cemetery, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who worked on the island.
Tip: The walk is relatively easy and provides great photo opportunities.
Despite its history, Île Royale is a vibrant ecosystem. Keep an eye out for monkeys (Capuchin and Saki monkeys are common), agoutis (large rodents), and a variety of tropical birds that now inhabit the island's lush vegetation.
Tip: Wildlife is often quite visible, especially around the former prison grounds. Do not feed the animals.
From various viewpoints on Île Royale, you can get a clear view of Île du Diable (Devil's Island), the smallest and most isolated of the Îles du Salut, famously used for political prisoners like Alfred Dreyfus. Access to Devil's Island is generally restricted due to dangerous currents, but you can see it well from Île Royale.
Tip: Binoculars can enhance your view of the infamous island. There's a dedicated viewpoint with information.
Take a refreshing dip in the famous "Convict Pool" (Piscine des Baigneurs), a natural, rock-enclosed tidal pool that was once used by the guards and their families. It offers safe swimming in the otherwise rough ocean surrounding the islands.
Tip: The pool provides a unique historical twist to a relaxing swim. There are often changing facilities nearby.
