A sun‑washed Corsican resort town named for the rust‑red porphyry rocks of the lighthouse islet joined to its harbor by a stone causeway.

Overview
L'Île-Rousse sits on Corsica's northwest Balagne coast, an 18th-century new town founded by Pascal Paoli as a Corsican rival to Genoese-held Calvi. It takes its name from the islets of red porphyry rising off its bay — most famously the Île de la Pietra, joined to the port by a stone causeway and crowned with a white lighthouse and a ruined Genoese tower. Behind the marina, a grid of paved old-town streets opens onto the covered market hall with its twenty-one columns and the plane-tree shade of Place Paoli, while a curve of white sand rims the bay to the south.
On a port call you step straight into the middle of it. The lighthouse islet is an easy 20-minute stroll from the quays, the morning market fills the covered hall with Corsican charcuterie, mountain cheeses, and honey, and the white sand of Plage Napoléon is minutes away on foot. With more time, ride the little U Trinichellu railcar along the coast toward Calvi's beaches, or head inland to the Balagne's eagle's-nest hill villages — Pigna's artisan workshops and Sant'Antonino, officially ranked among the most beautiful villages in France.
Cross the stone causeway to the red-rock islet that gave the town its name. The white lighthouse — first lit in 1857 — marks the harbor entrance, while the ruined Genoese tower at the islet's center was raised between 1530 and 1620 to watch for Barbary pirates.
Tip: Go early in the morning or near sunset for the richest light on the porphyry rocks, and wear shoes with grip — the granite can be slick.
The covered market — twenty-one columns holding up a registered historic monument — fills each morning with the Balagne's best: charcuterie, mountain cheeses, honey, olive oil, and the day's catch.
Tip: Arrive before 11 a.m. for the fullest stalls, then claim a terrace table beside the pillars for a long, lazy lunch.
The long, gently curving white-sand beach south of town, with clear, shallow water made for swimming and a promenade of cafés and restaurants behind it.
Tip: It's an easy 10-minute walk from the port — bring water shoes if you want to explore the rocky coves at either end.
Inland, the Balagne's granite hilltop villages reward the climb. Pigna charms with blue shutters and working artisan studios, while 9th-century Sant'Antonino — the “eagle's nest” officially listed among France's most beautiful villages — looks 360 degrees over olive groves to the sea.
Tip: Book a half-day village tour through your ship or a local operator — the winding mountain roads are far more relaxing with a driver.
This tiny two-car railcar putters along the coast toward Calvi, dropping sun-seekers at beaches the road never reaches. It's half transport, half attraction.
Tip: Buy tickets at the station early — the little train fills fast on summer port days, and the sea-side seats have the views.
The town's social heart: hundred-year-old plane trees, the Immaculée Conception de Marie church, enormous date palms planted in 1890, and locals playing pétanque in the shade of it all.
Tip: Come back in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden and the café terraces fill — it's the most Corsican hour of the day.
