Iguazu Falls (Iguazú Falls in Spanish) is a magnificent and awe-inspiring system of waterfalls on the Iguazu River, forming a natural border between Argentina and Brazil. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, it is a must-see for anyone traveling in the region. Unlike a traditional cruise port, a visit to Iguazu Falls from a cruise is a significant undertaking, typically offered as a shore excursion that involves a flight from a major cruise port like Buenos Aires, or as part of an extended land tour before or after your cruise.

The Argentine side of the falls, which contains approximately 80% of the cascades, offers a network of walkways and trails that take you right up to, and even over, the roaring water. The highlight of the Argentine side is the Devil's Throat, a U-shaped chasm where 14 waterfalls plunge simultaneously into a boiling cauldron of mist and spray. A walk along the extensive catwalk brings you right to the edge of this thunderous spectacle, offering a mind-blowing view and an exhilarating feeling of the falls' immense power.
Tip: Wear a poncho or rain gear as you will get soaked from the mist and spray. Protect your camera and phone with a waterproof bag.
Explore the extensive network of trails and walkways that make up the Upper and Lower Circuits on the Argentine side. The Upper Circuit provides stunning panoramic views from above the cascades, while the Lower Circuit takes you down to the base for up-close views and a more immersive, jungle-like experience.
Tip: Start with the Upper Circuit for a great overview, and then descend to the Lower Circuit to get closer to the action and feel the spray. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes.
To navigate the vast Iguazu National Park, hop on the Ecological Jungle Train. This open-air train takes you to the starting points for the various trail circuits, including the walkway to the Devil's Throat, all while offering a tranquil ride through the lush subtropical forest.
Tip: The train is an excellent way to cover long distances without getting tired, allowing you to save your energy for the walks around the falls.
For the ultimate rush, consider a boat tour that takes you right into the spray of the falls. The "Gran Aventura" or "Great Adventure" boat tour on the Argentine side is a thrilling ride that navigates the rapids and plunges you directly under the powerful cascades, ensuring you get completely drenched
Tip: You will get absolutely soaked. Wear a swimsuit under your clothes or be prepared with a full change of clothes. You will be provided with a waterproof bag for your belongings.
Keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife within the national park. The jungle is home to a variety of animals, including colorful birds like toucans and parrots, a variety of monkeys, coatis (a raccoon-like animal), and various species of butterflies that flutter around the falls.
Tip: Do not feed the coatis. They are wild animals and can become aggressive. Maintain a respectful distance and simply observe them in their natural habitat.
While the Argentine side offers a more intimate, up-close experience, the Brazilian side provides the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire waterfall system. Some excursions may offer the chance to cross the border to view the falls from this perspective.
Tip: Check your excursion details to see if a trip to the Brazilian side is included. If so, you will need your passport and potentially a visa, depending on your nationality.
