Overview
Iguassu Falls (also spelled Iguaçu or Iguazú) is one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders, a breathtaking series of over 275 individual waterfalls stretching for nearly 3 kilometers along the border of Brazil and Argentina. The Brazilian side of Iguassu Falls, located within the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, offers unparalleled panoramic views of the entire system. While the Argentine side (Parque Nacional Iguazú) provides a more immersive, up-close experience with numerous trails, the Brazilian side is renowned for its sweeping vistas that truly capture the grandeur and scale of the falls.
The Brazilian park is meticulously maintained with well-designed walkways and viewing platforms that allow visitors to appreciate the vast curtain of water from a distance before getting impressively close to the thunderous Devil's Throat. It offers a powerful sensory experience, combining the visual spectacle with the roar of the water and the refreshing mist that fills the air.
The core experience on the Brazilian side is the single main trail, a paved walkway that offers a continuous series of progressively more stunning panoramic views of the falls. The trail culminates at a walkway extending out over the water, bringing you incredibly close to the powerful Devil's Throat (Garganta do Diabo).
Tip: This walk takes about 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Start early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and for optimal light for photography. The trail is largely flat and accessible, with an elevator at the end for easy return.
For an adrenaline-pumping experience, embark on the Macuco Safari boat tour. This excursion starts with an electric vehicle ride through the jungle, followed by a short walk, and culminates in a powerful rigid inflatable boat (RIB) ride that takes you right up to and even underneath some of the cascades, guaranteeing a soaking.
Tip: This is an unmissable experience for thrill-seekers. Wear a swimsuit or quick-drying clothes, and store electronics in a waterproof bag. There are changing rooms and lockers available.
Located just outside the entrance to Iguassu National Park, Parque das Aves (Bird Park) is a fantastic conservation center dedicated to the birds of the Atlantic Rainforest and other regions. Walk through large aviaries that allow you to get up close with colorful toucans, macaws, flamingos, and many other species.
Tip: Allocate 1.5 to 2 hours for the bird park. It's an excellent complement to the falls visit, especially for families and nature lovers. It's easily accessible by bus or taxi from the falls entrance.
Gain a truly unique perspective with a helicopter tour over Iguassu Falls. This incredible 10-15 minute flight offers unparalleled aerial views of the entire falls system, both Brazilian and Argentine sides, revealing their immense scale and complexity from above.
Tip: Available only on the Brazilian side. While more expensive, it provides a spectacular and memorable vantage point. Tours depart from a helipad near the park entrance.
Beyond the waterfalls, the surrounding Atlantic Rainforest within the National Park is teeming with wildlife. Keep an eye out for coatis (raccoon-like mammals), various species of butterflies, colorful birds (including toucans), and capuchin monkeys along the trails.
Tip: Do not feed the coatis; they can be aggressive. Stay on marked trails to protect both yourself and the wildlife.
Enjoy lunch at Porto Canoas Restaurant, located at the end of the main trail within the National Park. It offers buffet-style dining with stunning views of the upper Iguassu River, just before it plunges over the falls.
Tip: It can get busy during peak lunch hours, but the views are worth it. It's a convenient spot to refuel after exploring the falls.
