Húsafell is a beautiful and historic farm and church estate located in the Borgarfjörður district of West Iceland. Tip: This is a guided tour that includes a scenic hike to the baths. Booking in advance is recommended as visitor numbers are limited to ensure a peaceful experience.
Discover the mesmerizing Hraunfossar (Lava Waterfalls), where countless rivulets of clear, glacial water seemingly burst out from beneath a vast lava field. Just a short walk away is Barnafoss (Children's Falls), a powerful and turbulent waterfall with a poignant local legend.
Tip: These waterfalls are easily accessible and located very close to Húsafell. There are well-maintained viewing platforms.
Embark on the incredible "Into the Glacier" tour which takes you deep inside Langjökull, Iceland's second-largest glacier. Travel in a specially modified monster truck across the ice cap before descending into a man-made ice tunnel, marveling at the blue ice and learning about glacial geology.
Tip: Tours depart from Húsafell. Dress very warmly in layers, as it's cold inside the glacier. This is an unforgettable adventure available year-round.
Venture underground into Víðgelmir Lava Cave, one of the largest and most impressive lava tubes in Iceland. Guided tours illuminate its stunning colorful formations, revealing the fascinating geological history of volcanic eruptions.
Tip: Tours are family-friendly and provide helmets and lights. The cave is well-lit and has walkways, making it accessible.
Enjoy hiking on the numerous well-marked trails around Húsafell. Explore the unique birch forest, lava formations, and canyons. Keep an eye out for the charming stone sculptures by local artist Páll Guðmundsson, which are often integrated into the landscape.
Tip: Trails vary in difficulty; maps are available at the Húsafell Information Center or Hotel Húsafell. Look for the famous "Húsafell Stone," a legendary lifting stone used in strongman competitions.
Unwind at the Húsafell Swimming Pool, a local favorite with geothermal heated water. Alternatively, for a more expansive spa experience, visit Krauma Geothermal Baths, about 30 km away, fed by Europe's most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver.
Tip: The Húsafell pool is a more casual, family-friendly option. Krauma offers a more luxurious setting with various hot and cold pools and a restaurant.
