Overview
Huatulco (formally Bahías de Huatulco) is a stunning resort destination located on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state, Mexico. Take a boat tour to explore several of Huatulco's nine bays and numerous beaches. Many tours include stops for swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of areas like La Entrega, Maguey, and Cacaluta. You'll also see sea lions and dramatic rock formations.
Tip: Book a tour from Santa Cruz Marina or La Crucecita. Choose a tour that includes snorkeling gear and a stop for lunch on a secluded beach.
Visit La Crucecita, the main town and commercial hub of Huatulco. Wander through its charming streets, browse local craft shops, and relax in the lively Central Park (Parque Central), dominated by the impressive Iglesia de la Crucecita church.
Tip: Enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants in La Crucecita, which offer authentic Oaxacan cuisine and fresh seafood. The church features a large painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe on its ceiling.
Dive into the underwater wonders of the Huatulco National Park (Parque Nacional Huatulco), which protects much of the region's coastline and marine life. The clear waters offer excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving among vibrant coral reefs and abundant fish.
Tip: Many boat tours to the bays include snorkeling stops within the park. Consider a dedicated dive trip for deeper exploration.
Take an excursion to the nearby coastal town of Mazunte (about 1.5-2 hours drive) to visit the National Mexican Turtle Center (Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga). Learn about sea turtle conservation efforts and see various species of turtles. You can also enjoy Mazunte's laid-back, bohemian atmosphere and beautiful beach.
Tip: This is a half-day or full-day trip. Combine it with a visit to the charming town of San Agustinillo or Zipolite beach.
For an adventure, experience rafting or kayaking on the Copalita River. Tours range from gentle floats suitable for families to more exhilarating rapids, offering a unique perspective of the jungle and local wildlife.
Tip: Book with a reputable tour operator. Wear appropriate clothing that can get wet, and bring insect repellent.
Take a guided tour into the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains to visit a traditional coffee plantation (finca). Learn about the coffee-making process from bean to cup, enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery, and sample locally grown organic coffee.
Tip: This is a full-day excursion that offers a cool escape from the coastal heat and a deep dive into Oaxaca's agricultural heritage.
