Holyhead is the largest town on the island of Anglesey, located on Holy Island (Ynys Gybi) off the northwest coast of Wales. It is primarily renowned as a major ferry port, serving as the principal gateway for travel between mainland Britain and Ireland, with frequent services to Dublin. This strategic position has shaped Holyhead's identity as a bustling maritime hub for centuries.

Tip: The RSPB Ellin's Tower Visitor Centre nearby offers fantastic birdwatching opportunities for guillemots, razorbills, and puffins (in spring/early summer). Wear sturdy shoes for the steps.
Embark on a walk along the Holyhead Mountain Coastal Path, part of the Anglesey Coastal Path. This scenic trail offers stunning views of the Irish Sea, the dramatic cliffs, and stretches of heathland. You can also visit the remains of a Roman watchtower and Iron Age hut circles.
Tip: The walk can be challenging in parts but is incredibly rewarding. Bring water and be prepared for strong winds.
Delve into Holyhead's rich maritime history at the Holyhead Maritime Museum, housed in a former lifeboat station. Learn about the town's seafaring past, its role as a packet station, the local lifeboat service, and the various shipwrecks in the treacherous waters.
Tip: The museum is relatively small but packed with interesting local history and artifacts.
Spend time at Breakwater Country Park, located at the northern end of Holyhead. This park is centered around a former quarry and offers walking trails, a lake, and excellent views of the vast Holyhead Breakwater and the busy port.
Tip: The Holyhead Breakwater is one of the longest in Europe; you can walk part of its length for impressive views back towards the port and town.
Visit St. Cybi's Church, a historic church built within the walls of a Roman fort (Caer Gybi). Explore the church and observe the impressive Roman walls that still form part of its perimeter, showcasing Holyhead's ancient past.
Tip: The Roman fort walls are particularly well-preserved on the seaward side of the church.
Explore the town centre of Holyhead, which offers a selection of local shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants. It's a good place to experience local Welsh culture and find a bite to eat before or after your explorations.
