A vibrant city shaped by peace and resilience.

Overview
Hiroshima is a vibrant and modern city located on the Ōta River delta in Japan's Chūgoku region. Known globally as the first city in history to be subjected to an atomic bomb attack on August 6, 1945, it has since risen from the ashes to become a powerful symbol of peace and resilience. The city has dedicated itself to advocating for nuclear disarmament and conveying the importance of peace, most notably through its Peace Memorial Park and Museum.
Beyond its profound historical significance, Hiroshima is a bustling urban center offering a rich cultural experience, delicious local cuisine, and easy access to beautiful surrounding areas. It is a compelling destination that combines solemn reflection with a vibrant contemporary spirit.
Begin your visit at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the various memorials, including the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), the Children's Peace Monument, and the Flame of Peace. Spend time in the Peace Memorial Museum to gain a deeper understanding of the atomic bombing and its aftermath.
Tip: Allow ample time (at least 2-3 hours) for the museum, as it is incredibly moving and informative. Visit the park respectfully.
Step into the serene beauty of Shukkei-en Garden, a traditional Japanese garden dating back to 1620. Its name means "shrunken scenery," and it features miniaturized landscapes of mountains, valleys, and forests around a central pond.
Tip: This garden offers a peaceful respite and is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season (late March/early April) or autumn foliage (late November).
Visit Hiroshima Castle, a reconstruction of the original feudal castle that was destroyed by the atomic bomb. Explore its grounds, climb the main keep for city views, and learn about its history as a strategic military stronghold.
Tip: The castle grounds are open to the public, and the reconstructed castle provides insight into traditional Japanese architecture and samurai history.
Indulge in Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki, a savory pancake distinctly different from its Osaka counterpart. It typically features layers of batter, cabbage, noodles (soba or udon), pork, and egg, all cooked on a teppan (iron griddle).
Tip: Head to Okonomimura ("Okonomiyaki Village"), a building with multiple floors housing over 20 Okonomiyaki restaurants, each with its unique twist.
Embark on a scenic ferry trip to Miyajima Island, home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its "floating" torii gate. Explore the shrine, encounter wild deer, and enjoy the island's picturesque charm.
Tip: Check the tide times if you want to see the torii gate at high tide (when it appears to float) or low tide (when you can walk out to it). This is a full half-day or more excursion from Hiroshima.
Explore the Hiroshima Museum of Art, located in the Central Park area. It houses a collection of European and Japanese art, primarily French Impressionist and post-Impressionist works, as well as Japanese oil paintings.
Tip: This museum offers a pleasant cultural interlude and a good opportunity to see some significant works of art.
