Himeji is a city located in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, best known as home to the magnificent Himeji Castle. Tip: This site was famously used as a filming location for "The Last Samurai." Allow at least half a day for this excursion, as it involves travel to the mountain and extensive walking within the temple grounds.
Located near the castle, the Himeji City Museum of Art showcases a collection of Japanese and foreign art, including works by local artists and European masters. The museum building itself is an attractive red-brick former army barracks.
