Overview
Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) archipelago, located off the south coast of Iceland. Tip: The hike is moderately challenging; wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for loose volcanic ash. The ground can still be warm in some spots.

Head to Stórhöfði, the windiest place in Europe and the southern tip of Heimaey. This is one of the best places in Iceland (and the world) to observe Atlantic puffins during their breeding season (roughly May to mid-August).
Tip: Bring binoculars for best viewing. Be extremely cautious near the cliff edges, especially on windy days. Visit in the late afternoon/evening when puffins return from fishing.
