Overview
Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) archipelago, located off the south coast of Iceland. This dramatic island is a product of intense volcanic activity, most notably the 1973 Eldfell eruption that nearly destroyed the town. Despite this catastrophic event, the resilient community rebuilt their home, which is now characterized by a unique landscape of black lava fields, lush green hills, and towering sea cliffs.
Heimaey is a critically important breeding ground for millions of Atlantic puffins, earning it the nickname "Puffin Capital of the World." Climb to the summit of Eldfell volcano, the "Fire Mountain" born in 1973. The hike offers incredible panoramic views of the island, the town of Vestmannaeyjar, and the surrounding ocean, showcasing the stark beauty of the new lava fields.
Tip: The hike is moderately challenging; wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for loose volcanic ash. The ground can still be warm in some spots.
Explore the fascinating Eldheimar Museum, which chronicles the dramatic 1973 Eldfell eruption. The museum is built around the excavated remains of houses buried by lava and ash, offering a poignant and immersive experience of the disaster and the town's recovery.
Tip: This is a must-visit to understand Heimaey's unique history. Allow at least 1-2 hours for a thorough visit.
Head to Stórhöfði, the windiest place in Europe and the southern tip of Heimaey. This is one of the best places in Iceland (and the world) to observe Atlantic puffins during their breeding season (roughly May to mid-August).
Tip: Bring binoculars for best viewing. Be extremely cautious near the cliff edges, especially on windy days. Visit in the late afternoon/evening when puffins return from fishing.
Embark on a boat tour around Heimaey to appreciate its dramatic sea caves, basalt columns, and diverse birdlife from the water. You might also spot whales or seals.
Tip: Boat tours offer a different perspective of the island's unique geology and provide excellent opportunities for close-up puffin viewing on the cliffs. Dress warmly for the boat ride.
Stroll through the charming town of Vestmannaeyjar, which was largely rebuilt after the 1973 eruption. Discover its colorful houses, the harbor, and visit local shops and cafes.
Tip: Look for the memorial to the 1973 eruption victims and the small but interesting aquarium (Sæheimar) for local marine life.
Explore Sæheimar, the local aquarium and natural history museum. It showcases the rich marine life of the Vestmannaeyjar waters and provides insights into the island's geology and birdlife, including rescued puffins.
