Overview
Hanavave is a breathtakingly beautiful bay and a small village located on the western coast of Fatu Hiva, the southernmost and most remote island of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. Often referred to as the "Bay of Virgins" (Baie des Vierges), a name given by missionaries to soften its original, more explicit French name referring to the phallus-shaped basaltic rock spires that dramatically rise on either side of its entrance, Hanavave is a truly spectacular natural harbor. The bay is nestled at the mouth of a steep-sided, lush valley, creating a visually stunning backdrop.
The village itself offers a glimpse into traditional Marquesan life, known for its strong emphasis on local crafts like tapa cloth making and intricate wood carvings. Hanavave provides a serene and authentic Polynesian experience, drawing visitors with its stunning scenery, rich cultural heritage, and the profound sense of isolation that characterizes the Marquesas.
Gaze in awe at the unique phallic-shaped basalt rock spires that guard the entrance to Hanavave Bay. The most iconic feature, they are particularly striking during sunset when the light creates dramatic colors and shadows.
Tip: The best views are often from the water, either from a tendered cruise ship or a small boat. Don't forget your camera for stunning photographic opportunities.
Wander through the small, tranquil Hanavave village at the head of the bay. Observe daily Marquesan life, and appreciate the simple charm of the community. You might see locals engaged in traditional activities.
Tip: The village has a small, sober church with an elaborate wooden altar that is worth a visit. Residents are generally friendly and welcoming.
Undertake a hike to the waterfall located at the end of the valley behind Hanavave village. The walk takes you through lush tropical vegetation, offering a refreshing escape and a chance to immerse in the island's natural beauty.
Tip: Ask locals for directions, as trails might not be clearly marked. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as paths can be unpaved and potentially muddy after rain.
Seek out local artisans in the village renowned for their traditional Marquesan handicrafts. Fatu Hiva is especially known for its tapa cloth (made from beaten tree bark) and intricate wood and bone carvings.
Tip: You may find opportunities to purchase unique, authentic souvenirs directly from the artists, and sometimes even observe the crafting process.
For the adventurous, consider the challenging but incredibly scenic 17-kilometer (10.5-mile) route between Hanavave and Omoa (the island's other main village). This route crosses the island's rugged interior, offering spectacular panoramas.
Tip: This can be a 6-7 hour strenuous hike or a 4x4 vehicle excursion. Only attempt the hike with good physical fitness, proper gear, and ideally a local guide. Prepare for steep ascents and potential rain.
Engage in the traditional practice of bartering with locals for fresh fruits (like the giant pamplemousse/grapefruit) or other local produce. While money is used, some villagers still appreciate exchanges for small goods like perfume or clothing.
Tip: Be respectful and polite in your interactions. While less common than in the past, it's a unique cultural experience if the opportunity arises.
