Hakodate is a picturesque port city located at the southern tip of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost major island. Tip: Go just before sunset to see the transition from day to night. It can get very crowded, so be prepared for queues, especially on clear evenings.
Visit Goryokaku Park, a massive, star-shaped, 19th-century Western-style fortress, now a public park. Climb the Goryokaku Tower for an aerial view of the unique star shape and the city beyond.
Tip: The park is stunning during cherry blossom season (late April/early May) and in autumn. Rent a rowboat in the moats during warmer months.
Stroll through the charming Motomachi District, known for its sloping streets, historic Western-style buildings, churches, and consulates that reflect Hakodate's international past.
Tip: Visit the Old British Consulate, Hakodate Orthodox Church, and Motomachi Catholic Church, each offering unique architectural styles.
Immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of the Hakodate Morning Market, located near Hakodate Station. Sample fresh seafood, local produce, and try the famous "squid fishing" experience.
Tip: Go early in the morning for the freshest seafood and the most vibrant activity. Don't miss trying "uni ikura don" (sea urchin and salmon roe bowl).
Take a ride on the Hakodate Tram, a charming streetcar system that offers a convenient and scenic way to explore the city's main attractions, connecting Hakodate Station, Goryokaku, and the Motomachi area.
Tip: Purchase a one-day pass if you plan to use the tram frequently, as it offers good value for multiple rides.
Discover the historic Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses along the waterfront. These beautifully preserved 19th-century warehouses now house a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes, perfect for shopping and dining.
