Overview
Gyeongju, often referred to as "the museum without walls," is a city steeped in history and ancient grandeur. It served as the capital of the Silla Kingdom for nearly 1,000 years, and its legacy is visible everywhere in the form of royal tombs, temples, and palaces. Gyeongju's rich cultural heritage has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status and makes it a must-see for anyone interested in Korean history and architecture.
As a shore excursion from the port of Busan, a day in Gyeongju offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore magnificent historical sites. From the serene grounds of ancient Buddhist temples to the burial mounds of kings and queens, a visit to Gyeongju feels like stepping into a living history book. It is a tranquil and profound experience that offers a perfect contrast to the bustling modernity of Busan.
Visit the magnificent Bulguksa Temple, a masterpiece of Buddhist art and architecture from the 8th century. Afterward, take a shuttle or taxi further up the mountain to the Seokguram Grotto, which houses a serene and beautiful stone Buddha. Both sites are UNESCO World Heritage sites and are among South Korea's most treasured cultural landmarks.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of walking and some climbing at both sites. Be prepared for a short shuttle or taxi ride between the two.
Discover the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, a collection of large, grass-covered burial mounds that contain the tombs of Silla royalty. While most mounds are for viewing only, you can enter the interior of Cheonmachong (Heavenly Horse Tomb), where a fascinating collection of gold crowns and artifacts was discovered.
Tip: The grounds are vast and beautiful, perfect for a leisurely stroll and some great photos.
Visit Anapji Pond, a tranquil and beautiful former royal palace garden. Originally part of the Donggung Palace, it served as a pleasure garden for the Silla royal family. The site, with its reconstructed pavilions and serene pond, is especially stunning at night when the buildings are illuminated and reflected in the water.
Tip: If your excursion allows for a late visit, the evening view is truly magical. During the day, it's a peaceful spot for reflection and photography.
Gain a deeper understanding of the Silla Kingdom's art and history at the Gyeongju National Museum. The museum houses an incredible collection of artifacts, including the famous Divine Bell of King Seongdeok and treasures excavated from the royal tombs.
Tip: The museum's collection of golden artifacts is particularly impressive and is a must-see.
Marvel at Cheomseongdae, an ancient astronomical observatory that is believed to be the oldest surviving observatory in East Asia. The structure, built in the 7th century, is a unique and captivating example of Silla's scientific and architectural ingenuity.
Tip: Cheomseongdae is located in a large historical park that is a great place to walk or rent a bicycle.
Visit the newly restored Woljeonggyo Bridge, a beautiful covered bridge that was a part of the Silla capital's palace complex. The bridge is a stunning piece of architecture and offers a great photo opportunity, especially at night when its elegant wooden structure is lit up.
Tip: The bridge is a short walk from Anapji Pond, making them easy to combine into one visit.
