Tip: Look for the small carved crosses on the doorposts of some houses, which were a silent sign of crypto-Judaism after the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal.
Located in a former Episcopal Palace, the Guarda Museum houses a diverse collection of artifacts that tell the story of the city and the region, from archaeology and ethnography to art and history. It provides an excellent overview of the area's rich past.
Tip: The museum is a great place to start your visit to understand the context of the city's historical sites.
Climb to the top of the Torre de Menagem, the remains of the old castle keep, which stands on the highest point in the city. The tower offers an incredible 360-degree view of Guarda's rooftops and the majestic landscape of the Serra da Estrela.
Tip: The climb is a bit strenuous, but the reward of the expansive view is well worth the effort.
Guarda serves as a perfect base for an excursion into the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. The park offers opportunities for hiking, cheese tasting (the local Serra da Estrela cheese is famous), and, in winter, even skiing.
Tip: Take a day trip to the mountain's highest point, Torre, which is marked by a unique monument and offers a view of the entire park.
