Overview
Grindelwald is a quintessential Swiss Alpine village nestled in the Bernese Oberland region, surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Jungfrau, Mönch, and the iconic Eiger's north face. Often referred to as the "Glacier Village," it boasts a unique blend of traditional chalet charm, stunning panoramic vistas, and vibrant natural beauty. Its landscape is defined by towering mountains, lush green meadows in summer, and pristine snowscapes in winter, offering a truly idyllic setting for visitors seeking both adventure and tranquility.
This picturesque destination serves as a major gateway to the Jungfrau Region's extensive network of mountain railways, cable cars, and hiking trails, making it a hub for alpine exploration. Grindelwald provides a lively yet serene atmosphere, making it a beloved spot for both relaxing amidst nature's grandeur and engaging in thrilling outdoor pursuits throughout the year, from skiing and snowboarding to paragliding and challenging hikes.
Take the scenic gondola up to Grindelwald First, a mountain playground offering exhilarating activities. Walk the First Cliff Walk by Tissot, a suspended walkway providing dizzying views, and try the First Flyer (zip line) or First Glider (soaring eagle ride) for an adrenaline rush.
Tip: Purchase an "Adventure Package" ticket to combine multiple activities at First. Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially for the Cliff Walk.
From First, embark on a relatively easy and incredibly scenic hike to Bachalpsee Lake. This stunning alpine lake is famous for its crystal-clear waters, often reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks on a calm day.
Tip: The hike is mostly flat after an initial incline and takes about 1-1.5 hours round trip. It's one of the most photographed spots in the region.
Embark on the iconic train journey to Jungfraujoch, the "Top of Europe," Europe's highest railway station. Explore the Ice Palace, visit the Sphinx Observatory for panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier (Europe's longest), and enjoy snow activities year-round.
Tip: Book tickets in advance, as this is a very popular and costly excursion. Dress warmly, even in summer, as it's always cold at the summit.
Walk through the dramatic Grindelwald Glacier Canyon, a deep gorge carved by the Lower Grindelwald Glacier. Follow elevated walkways, tunnels, and a suspended "spiderweb" net high above the rushing glacial river.
Tip: Entry is relatively inexpensive. It's an excellent option for a slightly rainy day as much of it is sheltered.
Stroll through the charming village center of Grindelwald, admiring the traditional chalets, shops, and cafes. Seek out viewpoints that offer direct, awe-inspiring views of the imposing Eiger North Face.
Tip: Many hotels and restaurants offer fantastic Eiger views from their terraces. Look for local handicraft shops.
Choose another scenic cable car ride:
Männlichen: Known for its "Royal Walk" to a crown-shaped viewpoint and family-friendly attractions.
Pfingstegg: Offers a summer toboggan run and a thrilling zip-line, with great views of the Upper Grindelwald Glacier.
Tip: Both offer different perspectives and activities. Check which one aligns best with your interests and time.
