Grand Canyon National Park is a majestic inland destination that is a testament to the powerful forces of nature. The most popular way to experience the canyon is by exploring the South Rim Trail. This paved, relatively flat trail stretches for miles, offering a series of stunning viewpoints. Alternatively, utilize the park's free shuttle bus system to hop on and off at various lookouts, such as Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Hermit's Rest.
Tip: The shuttle buses are an excellent way to navigate the park and reduce traffic and parking congestion.
For a truly awe-inspiring perspective, consider a helicopter or airplane tour over the canyon. These tours provide a bird's-eye view of the immense size and complex geology of the canyon, allowing you to see sights that are impossible to view from the rim.
Tip: Book these tours well in advance, as they are very popular and can sell out quickly.
Visit the historic Grand Canyon Village, which serves as the hub of the South Rim. Here, you'll find hotels, restaurants, and historic buildings like the Bright Angel Lodge and the El Tovar Hotel. The village is also the starting point for the famous Bright Angel Trail.
Tip: Take some time to explore the Kolb Studio and the Lookout Studio, which offer both historical context and magnificent views.
Stay for the sunset to see a magical transformation of the canyon. As the sun dips below the horizon, the canyon walls and rock formations change from red and orange to deep purples and blues. Popular sunset spots include Hopi Point and Mather Point.
Tip: Bring a jacket or blanket, as temperatures can drop quickly after the sun sets.
If you have your own vehicle, take a drive along the scenic Desert View Drive (Highway 64), which stretches east from the Grand Canyon Village. This drive offers several panoramic viewpoints and leads to the impressive Desert View Watchtower, a 70-foot stone tower with a breathtaking view.
Tip: The Watchtower has a fascinating interior with murals by a Hopi artist. Be sure to climb to the top for the best views.
For the more adventurous, hike a short portion of one of the famous trails, such as the Bright Angel Trail or the South Kaibab Trail. Even a short descent into the canyon will give you a profound sense of its scale and grandeur.
Tip: Do not attempt to hike to the bottom of the canyon and back in one day. The trail is much more difficult to climb out of than it is to descend. A short hike to the first or second rest houses is a great option.
