Overview
Gijón (Xixón in Asturian) is the largest city in Asturias, a region known as "Green Spain," situated on the central coast of the Cantabrian Sea in northern Spain. It's a vibrant and dynamic city that successfully blends its ancient Roman and maritime history with a modern, lively atmosphere. Gijón boasts beautiful urban beaches, particularly San Lorenzo Beach, a charming old fishermen's quarter (Cimavilla), and a rich cultural scene. Surrounded by lush green hills and cliffs, it offers a refreshing contrast to the more arid parts of Spain, providing a taste of Atlantic Spain's unique character.
Cruise ships calling at Gijón typically dock at the El Musel Container Terminal, which is a modern, deep-water port located a few kilometers (approx. 5-7 km / 3-4 miles) west of the city center. From the terminal, passengers are usually transported to Gijón's main attractions via organized shuttle buses provided by the cruise line, local public transport, or taxis. The journey to the city center takes approximately 15-20 minutes. A visit to Gijón offers cruise passengers an opportunity to experience authentic Asturian culture, explore a historic maritime city, relax on beautiful urban beaches, and enjoy the region's renowned cider.
Enjoy a leisurely walk along the beautiful San Lorenzo Beach (Playa de San Lorenzo), Gijón's iconic urban beach. The extensive promenade that runs along its crescent shape is perfect for a stroll, people-watching, and enjoying views of the Cantabrian Sea.
Tip: Even if it's not beach weather, the promenade offers a refreshing coastal experience. Look for the "Letronas" (giant Gijón sign) for a photo opportunity.
Wander through Cimavilla, Gijón's oldest and most charming quarter, nestled on a peninsula overlooking the sea. This historic fishermen's village features narrow, winding streets, colorful traditional houses, and the iconic Elogio del Horizonte sculpture at its tip.
Tip: The climb up to the Elogio del Horizonte (Praise of the Horizon) offers fantastic panoramic views of the city and coastline.
Admire the grandeur of the Revillagigedo Palace, an imposing 18th-century Baroque palace now used for cultural events and exhibitions. Adjacent to it is the beautiful Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista, forming a significant architectural complex in the city center.
Tip: The palace courtyard is a pleasant spot for a brief rest and photos.
Step back in time at the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés (Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés), located beneath the Revillagigedo Palace. These well-preserved ruins offer fascinating insight into Gijón's Roman origins and daily life in the 1st to 4th centuries AD.
Tip: The interpretive displays provide good context for understanding the layout and function of the baths.
Immerse yourself in Asturian culture by visiting a traditional sidrería (cider house). Order some local Asturian cider (sidra), which is famously poured from a height (escanciado) to aerate it. Enjoy it with traditional Asturian tapas (raciones).
Tip: It's customary to pour a small amount at a time and drink it quickly. Don't be shy about trying to pour it yourself!
Take an excursion to the Jardín Botánico Atlántico, a beautiful and expansive botanical garden located a short distance from the city center. It showcases the flora of the Atlantic regions of Europe, with themed gardens and naturalistic landscapes.
Tip: Allow a few hours to explore the different sections of the garden. It's a peaceful escape from the city bustle.
