Overview
Ghent (Gent in Dutch) is a captivating city in Belgium, often described as a hidden gem that blends medieval grandeur with a lively, contemporary edge. Ghent is NOT a direct cruise port for ocean-going cruise ships. It is an inland city accessible via river cruises on the Scheldt River or as a shore excursion from larger ocean cruise ports in Belgium, most commonly Zeebrugge (approximately 60-70 km / 37-43 miles away) or Antwerp (approximately 60 km / 37 miles away). Passengers arriving by ocean cruise would typically disembark in Zeebrugge or Antwerp and then travel by bus or train for a day trip to Ghent. River cruise ships, however, often dock directly within Ghent, allowing passengers to step right into the city. A visit to Ghent offers cruise passengers a delightful journey through time, combining historical exploration with a taste of modern Belgian culture.
