A Birdwatcher's Paradise in the Galapagos

Overview
Genovesa Island, also known as Tower Island, is a remote, uninhabited volcanic island in the northeastern Galapagos Archipelago. It is a horseshoe-shaped island, the result of a collapsed volcanic caldera that has created a sheltered bay. Genovesa is known as "Bird Island" for good reason—it is a sanctuary for an extraordinary number of seabirds, including the world's largest colony of red-footed boobies. Due to its unique and fragile ecosystem, it is only accessible via certain multi-day cruise itineraries on small expedition ships, as day trips are not permitted.
A stop at Genovesa is a highlight for nature enthusiasts and photographers, offering intimate encounters with wildlife that have no fear of humans. From the bustling nesting colonies to the unique geology and underwater life, a visit to Genovesa provides a rare and pristine glimpse into the untouched natural wonders of the Galapagos.
Disembark at the steep, rocky steps known as Prince Philip's Steps, which lead up to a high cliff and plateau. A hike along the trail takes you through a unique landscape and past large nesting colonies of Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and storm petrels. Keep an eye out for the endemic short-eared owls, which hunt for storm petrels in broad daylight.
Tip: The landing can be a bit challenging, and the steps are steep. Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear and take your time.
Enjoy a wet landing at the picturesque Darwin Bay, a beautiful white coral-sand beach located inside the collapsed caldera. This is a very popular site for a guided walk, where you can stroll among nesting frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls. You'll also encounter playful sea lions basking on the beach.
Tip: The trail can be wet and muddy, so waterproof or quick-drying shoes are a good choice.
Take advantage of the calm, clear waters inside Darwin Bay for some of the best snorkeling in the Galapagos. The nutrient-rich water attracts a variety of marine life, including colorful reef fish, rays, sea lions, and even the occasional hammerhead shark or sea turtle.
Tip: Listen carefully to your guide's instructions on where to snorkel and what to look for to maximize your wildlife encounters.
Genovesa is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. You will have the opportunity to see species not commonly found on other islands, such as the large colony of red-footed boobies, which are the only booby species to nest in trees. You will also see great frigatebirds with their impressive red throat pouches and the endemic swallow-tailed gulls.
Tip: Maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife, and never touch or feed them. The animals have little fear, so you can often get excellent photos without getting too close.
Your naturalist guide will often take you on a panga ride along the steep cliffs and rugged shoreline of the caldera. This offers a different perspective on the island's geology and allows you to spot nesting red-billed tropicbirds flying in and out of the crevices.
Tip: This is a great opportunity for photos from the water, so have your camera ready.
Take time to appreciate the unique geology of Genovesa. The horseshoe shape of the island and the collapsed caldera are the results of a long-extinct shield volcano. The volcanic landscape is a fascinating backdrop for all the abundant life that thrives here.
Tip: The lava formations and rocky cliffs tell a story of millions of years of volcanic activity, so pay attention to your guide's commentary for a better understanding.
