Take a trip to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, a beautiful and significant shrine dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, a revered scholar and politician. The shrine is surrounded by lovely gardens, ponds, and is famous for its plum trees and the delicious umegae mochi (sweet bean paste cakes).
Tip: The approach to the shrine is lined with unique shops selling local crafts and sweets. It's about a 30-minute train or bus ride from downtown Fukuoka.
Explore Kushida Shrine, Fukuoka's oldest and most important Shinto shrine, known for its elaborate festival floats (yamakasa) and its spiritual significance. Nearby, visit the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum to see traditional merchant houses and learn about Hakata's history and crafts.
Tip: Try your hand at traditional Hakata crafts at the Folk Museum, such as dyeing or weaving.
Head to Fukuoka Tower, Japan's tallest seaside tower, soaring 234 meters high. The observation deck offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of Fukuoka city, Hakata Bay, and the surrounding areas.
Tip: Visit during sunset or evening hours for spectacular city lights and nighttime views.
Enjoy a relaxing walk in Ohori Park, a beautiful Japanese garden featuring a large pond with three islands connected by elegant bridges. Adjacent to the park are the Fukuoka Castle Remains, offering historical insight and pleasant grounds for exploration.
Tip: Rent a paddle boat on the pond in Ohori Park for a unique perspective. The castle remains are particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season.
Indulge in retail therapy at Canal City Hakata, a massive shopping and entertainment complex with a canal running through its center, featuring shops, restaurants, a cinema, and a musical fountain. Alternatively, explore the upscale and trendy Tenjin district for department stores and boutiques.
Tip: Canal City often has performances and shows around its central canal area; check the schedule upon arrival.
