Overview
Fuerteventura is the second largest of Spain's Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa. Renowned for its stunning, extensive golden and white sand beaches, its unique volcanic landscapes, and its consistent trade winds, Fuerteventura is a paradise for beach lovers and watersports enthusiasts alike. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the island boasts a stark, desert-like beauty with ancient volcanoes, vast plains, and clear turquoise waters, providing a striking contrast to the lushness of other Canary Islands.
Cruise ships visiting Fuerteventura typically dock at the main port of Puerto del Rosario, the island's capital. The port facilities are well-equipped to handle cruise liners, and the town center is within walking distance or a short taxi ride away. From Puerto del Rosario, passengers can easily access the island's famous beaches, charming inland villages, and a wide range of outdoor activities. Fuerteventura offers cruise passengers an ideal escape for sun-drenched relaxation, adventurous exploration, and a taste of the Canary Islands' unique natural environment.
Visit the magnificent Corralejo Dunes National Park in the north of the island. These vast, sweeping white sand dunes stretch for miles, contrasting dramatically with the turquoise ocean. It's an ideal spot for sunbathing, walking, or simply marveling at the unique landscape.
Tip: The dunes are a protected area; stick to marked paths and avoid disturbing the fragile ecosystem.
Discover the charming village of El Cotillo on the northwest coast, famous for its "Lagoons" (Los Charcos) – a series of calm, clear, and shallow white-sand coves protected by natural reefs, perfect for families and snorkeling. Nearby, the more exposed beaches are popular for surfing.
Tip: The lagoons are ideal for safe swimming and relaxation, offering a more secluded feel than some of the larger resort beaches.
Journey inland to Betancuria, the island's original and historic capital. Nestled in a lush valley, this charming village boasts beautiful traditional Canary Island architecture, a historic church (Iglesia de Santa María), and a peaceful atmosphere.
Tip: Visit the small archaeological museum to learn about the island's indigenous past. There are also several craft shops and restaurants.
Embark on an adventurous trip to Cofete Beach on the remote Jandía Peninsula in the south. This wild, expansive, and incredibly dramatic beach is backed by towering mountains and offers a sense of vast wilderness. It's often reached by 4x4.
Tip: Access can be challenging (unpaved roads); consider an organized excursion. The strong currents make swimming dangerous, so enjoy the views from the sand.
Take advantage of Fuerteventura's consistent trade winds, which make it a world-renowned destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Lessons and equipment rentals are available at various beaches, especially around Sotavento (south) and Corralejo (north).
Tip: Even if you don't partake, watching the colorful sails and kites against the blue sky is a spectacle in itself.
Learn about the cultivation and benefits of Aloe Vera, for which Fuerteventura is well-known. Visit one of the island's many plantations or farms, where you can see the plants and purchase natural Aloe Vera products.
Tip: Many farms offer guided tours explaining the plant's properties and processing.
