Admire the striking Historisches Kaufhaus (Historical Merchants' Hall) on Minster Square. This vibrant red building with its ornate façade and arcades dates back to the 16th century and is a prominent symbol of Freiburg's rich trading past.
Tip: It's one of the most photographed buildings in the city, especially beautiful in the sunlight.
Ride the Schlossbergbahn funicular up to the Schlossberg (Castle Hill), which offers fantastic elevated views of Freiburg, the Minster, and the surrounding Black Forest and Rhine Valley. You can also explore walking trails and the Schlossbergturm (observation tower) at the top.
Tip: The "Kastaniengarten" beer garden on Schlossberg is a wonderful spot for a refreshment with a view.
See the two medieval city gates that still stand: Schwabentor (Swabian Gate) and Martinstor (Martin's Gate). These historic towers, once part of the city's fortifications, now frame bustling streets and offer a glimpse into Freiburg's past.
Tip: The Schwabentor features a fresco of St. George and the Dragon. The Martinstor has a fast-food restaurant built into its base!
Visit the Augustinermuseum, housed in a former Augustinian monastery. This impressive museum showcases art and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, with a focus on regional works, including original sculptures from the Minster.
