Norway’s westernmost town, where a 12th‑century stone church keeps watch over an island archipelago at the edge of the open sea.

Overview
Florø sits at the very edge of the map — Norway's westernmost town, founded by royal decree in 1860 on the island of Florelandet, farther west than Amsterdam or Nice. Herring built it: the silvery shoals made Florø a 19th-century boomtown, and three herrings still swim across its coat of arms. Fishing and shipbuilding remain the town's heartbeat, joined since the 1960s by the North Sea oil industry, which Florø serves as a supply base. Around it lies a maze of skerries and green islands in the Sunnfjord district of Vestland, with the open Atlantic breaking just beyond.
You step off the ship straight into a working coastal town of pastel wooden houses, then the archipelago takes over. A ferry carries you to Kinn, where a 12th-century stone church stands beneath a mountain split by a legendary cleft. Back on the mainland side, you can climb Brandsøyåsen for the full panorama of town, islands, and sea, wander the boat halls of the Coastal Museum, or join a sea eagle safari among the outer skerries. Florø is small, walkable, and utterly maritime — a port call measured in sea air and island light.
A short ferry ride west of town brings you to this wave-washed island and its white Romanesque stone church. Behind it rises Kinnaklova, the great cleft mountain sailors have steered by for centuries.
Tip: Book the Kinn island boat through the tourist office and enjoy the guided church walk.
Set in a 7.4-hectare harborside park, the Coastal Museum tells the story of life on this edge of Norway. It includes a fisherman's home and the rise of Florø itself. Look around slowly.
Tip: Allow an hour, and the museum sits an easy walk from the town center.
Svanøy is called the "gem of Sunnfjord." It is a lush, sheltered island that was once a noble seat and a bishop's estate. Take time to look around and enjoy the setting.
Tip: Boats run from Florø to Svanøy, and the deer center's guided tours operate June through August, Tuesday to Friday.
The 292-meter summit behind town rewards a modest climb with the definitive Florø panorama. It includes the pastel wooden houses below. It is an easy stop to enjoy at your own pace.
Tip: Bring a windproof layer even in summer, and the trailhead is reachable on foot from the center.
Across the water in Bremanger lies one of Western Norway's best-kept secrets: a fishing village whose old waterfront is reputedly the largest and best-preserved in the county. Take a slow look around.
Tip: Combine with a coastal drive, and the village sits on the island of Frøya along the Frøysjøen strait.
The skerries and islets around Florø are prime white-tailed eagle territory. Local operators run RIB safaris out among them.
Tip: Bring a camera with a fast shutter, and dress warmer than you think.
