Overview
Flåm (pronounced "Flawm") is a tiny, picturesque village nestled at the innermost end of the Aurlandsfjord, a dramatic branch of Norway's longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord. Surrounded by impossibly steep mountains, cascading waterfalls, and lush valleys, Flåm epitomizes the breathtaking natural beauty of the Norwegian fjords. Despite its small size (population around 350), it is one of Norway's most visited destinations, primarily due to the world-renowned Flåm Railway, a masterpiece of engineering that offers one of the steepest and most scenic train journeys on Earth. Flåm serves as a gateway to UNESCO World Heritage-listed landscapes and a hub for outdoor adventure.
Flåm is an extremely popular port of call for cruise ships on Norwegian Fjords itineraries. Cruise ships typically dock directly at the pier in the center of the village, providing easy and direct access to the main attractions, including the Flåm Railway station, which is just a short walk away. Some larger ships, or when multiple ships are in port, might use tenders, but direct docking is common. A visit to Flåm offers cruise passengers an unforgettable experience of Norway's iconic fjord scenery, a chance to ride one of the world's most spectacular trains, and opportunities for various outdoor activities.
Embark on the iconic Flåm Railway, a masterpiece of engineering and one of the world's steepest standard-gauge railway lines. The 20-kilometer journey from Flåm to Myrdal (and back) offers breathtaking views of waterfalls, deep ravines, and snow-capped mountains. The train typically makes a photo stop at Kjosfossen waterfall.
Tip: Book tickets well in advance, especially during peak season, as they sell out quickly. Sit on both sides of the train for different perspectives.
Experience the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nærøyfjord, one of Norway's narrowest and most dramatic fjords, with towering cliffs and charming villages clinging to the mountainsides. Many cruises depart from Flåm to Gudvangen, often using modern, eco-friendly vessels.
Tip: This is often combined with the Flåm Railway as part of the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour. Check for combined ticket options.
Located by the Flåm Railway station, the Flåm Railway Museum offers free entry and provides fascinating insights into the construction of this incredible railway line, showcasing historical artifacts and photographs.
Tip: It's a great quick stop, especially if you have some time before or after your train journey.
Take a scenic bus tour to the Stegastein Viewpoint, a stunning cantilevered platform situated 650 meters above the Aurlandsfjord. It offers unparalleled panoramic views of the fjord and surrounding mountains.
Tip: Tours typically depart from Flåm. This viewpoint provides some of the most iconic photos of the region.
Sample award-winning craft beers at the Ægir Bryggeri, a Viking-inspired microbrewery located near the harbor. They often offer tastings and hearty pub food in a cozy atmosphere.
Tip: A great place to relax and enjoy local Norwegian flavors after your excursions.
For a more active experience, consider walking or renting a bike to explore parts of the Flåm Valley and the historic Rallarvegen (navvy road). This allows you to get closer to the waterfalls and enjoy the serene rural landscape.
Tip: Bike rentals are available near the port. Some choose to bike down from Myrdal after taking the Flåm Railway up.
