Tip: The Madrassa is one of the few religious sites in Fes that is accessible to non-Muslims. It provides an excellent photo opportunity of traditional Moroccan design.
While the Fes Royal Palace (Dar el Makhzen) itself is not open to the public, its seven magnificent bronze gates are a must-see. Located in the Fes el-Jdid district, these beautifully ornate doors feature intricate metalwork and are an outstanding example of modern Moroccan craftsmanship.
Tip: The main square in front of the gates is a great place to stop for a photo and appreciate the scale and artistry of the palace entrance.
Take a break from the busy medina at the serene Najjarine Museum of Wood Arts and Crafts. Housed in a beautifully restored caravanserai (a traditional inn for caravans), the museum currently showcases a superb collection of intricately carved wooden tools and furniture.
Tip: The rooftop café offers a peaceful retreat with fantastic views over the medina and a cup of traditional mint tea.
The souks of Fes are a paradise for shoppers. Look for unique local crafts such as hand-hammered brass lanterns, vibrant textiles, hand-painted ceramics, and, of course, the famous leather goods from the tanneries.
