Overview
The Farne Islands are an archipelago of rugged, treeless islands and rocks located off the coast of Northumberland, England, just a few kilometers southeast of the fishing village of Seahouses. Administered by the National Trust, these islands are one of the United Kingdom's most important wildlife sanctuaries, internationally renowned for their enormous colonies of nesting seabirds, including the iconic puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and terns. They are also home to a large population of grey seals. Beyond the incredible wildlife, the islands have a rich history, particularly associated with the heroic lighthouse keeper's daughter, Grace Darling, who famously rescued shipwrecked sailors in 1838.
The Farne Islands are a popular boat trip destination, typically accessed from the nearby mainland village of Seahouses. While not a direct port of call for large cruise ships, they are a highly sought-after shore excursion for passengers on British Isles cruises or those on land tours who can reach Seahouses. Passengers will usually embark on smaller, locally operated boats from Seahouses to tour the islands. A visit to the Farne Islands offers cruise passengers an extraordinary opportunity to get remarkably close to vast seabird colonies, observe seals in their natural habitat, and experience the wild beauty of the Northumberland coast.
During the breeding season (typically May to late July), the islands are home to tens of thousands of nesting seabirds, most notably the charismatic puffins, with their brightly colored beaks. You'll get incredibly close views of them nesting, flying, and diving for fish. Other species include guillemots, razorbills, shags, and various terns.
Tip: Bring a good camera with a zoom lens! Wear a hat – Arctic Terns are known to peck at visitors' heads if they feel threatened during nesting season on Staple Island or Inner Farne.
Throughout the year, the Farne Islands are home to a large and growing population of grey seals. You'll see them lounging on the rocks, swimming in the surrounding waters, and perhaps even curious pups (especially in autumn).
Tip: Boat trips often pause near the seal haul-out sites, providing excellent viewing opportunities.
Enjoy a thrilling and informative boat trip around the various islands of the archipelago. Your skipper will navigate close to the dramatic cliffs, pointing out different bird species, rock formations, and perhaps offering commentary on the islands' history.
Tip: Choose a boat trip that offers a full circumnavigation to see as much as possible. Dress warmly and waterproof, as it can be chilly and wet on the water.
Some boat trips offer the option to land on Inner Farne or Staple Island (during nesting season). This allows for a unique, close-up walking experience among the seabird colonies, with designated paths to follow to protect the birds.
Tip: Landing is highly seasonal and weather-dependent. There's often a landing fee collected by the National Trust. Expect the air to be filled with the sounds and smells of thousands of birds!
Hear the inspiring story of Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper's daughter who, with her father, bravely rowed out in a storm in 1838 to rescue survivors from the wrecked steamship Forfarshire. Her heroism is an integral part of the islands' lore.
Tip: Your boat skipper will likely tell the story. You can also visit the Grace Darling Museum in Bamburgh (on the mainland, a short drive from Seahouses) for more details.
Capture the raw beauty of the Farne Islands and the Northumberland coast. The rugged cliffs, lighthouses, and vast expanse of the North Sea provide stunning photographic opportunities for both wildlife and landscapes.
Tip: Consider bringing a telephoto lens for wildlife and a wide-angle for landscapes. Protect your gear from sea spray.
