Overview
Èze is an enchanting medieval village perched dramatically on a towering cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, along the stunning French Riviera between Nice and Monaco. This "eagle's nest" village is renowned for its captivating cobblestone streets, charming artisan shops, and ancient stone houses, all meticulously preserved. Its most iconic feature is the Exotic Garden (Jardin Exotique) built amidst the ruins of a medieval castle, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the coastline, the azure sea, and even Corsica on a clear day. Èze exudes a timeless charm, blending its rich history with the glamorous backdrop of the Côte d'Azur.
While Èze itself does not have a cruise port (as it is a clifftop village), it is an incredibly popular and frequent shore excursion destination for cruises calling at nearby ports on the French Riviera, such as Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, or Monaco (Monte Carlo). Access to Èze from these ports typically involves a bus or taxi transfer up the winding roads to the village. A visit to Èze offers cruise passengers a unique blend of medieval history, artistic inspiration, and some of the most breathtaking coastal views in the Mediterranean.
Ascend to the very top of the village to discover the magnificent Exotic Garden, built amidst the ruins of a 12th-century castle. This unique garden features a remarkable collection of cacti, succulents, and Mediterranean plants, strategically placed to frame breathtaking panoramic views of the Côte d'Azur, from Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to the Esterel mountains.
Tip: This is a must-do for the views alone. Wear comfortable shoes as it involves walking uphill and steps.
Lose yourself in the labyrinthine cobblestone alleys of Èze's medieval village. Discover hidden squares, ancient stone houses, charming boutiques, art galleries, and small cafes tucked into centuries-old walls.
Tip: The village is pedestrian-only and steep in parts. Take your time to explore every winding path and enjoy the unique atmosphere.
Step inside the village's beautiful Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, easily recognizable by its distinct yellow and black bell tower. Built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier church, it features a Baroque interior and offers a quiet respite.
Tip: Pay attention to the intricate details inside and the peaceful ambiance.
Just at the base of the Èze village (Èze-Bord-de-Mer), or often included in excursions to the area, is the Fragonard Perfume Factory. Take a free guided tour to learn about the process of perfume making, from raw ingredients to finished product, and browse their extensive shop.
Tip: This is a great opportunity to learn about a traditional French craft and pick up unique souvenirs. It's usually a short stop on bus tours.
If your excursion allows time, consider enjoying a meal or a drink at one of Èze's restaurants, some of which offer stunning terraces with unparalleled sea views.
Tip: Reservations are often recommended for restaurants with prime views. Even a simple coffee with a view can be a memorable experience.
For the very active and if time permits, consider walking a portion of the Nietzsche Path, a steep trail connecting the clifftop village of Èze to Èze-sur-Mer (the seaside part of town). This scenic but challenging path is where philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche reportedly found inspiration.
Tip: This is a very strenuous descent/ascent. Only attempt if you are fit, have appropriate footwear, and ample time. Most cruise excursions will not include this.
