Overview
Eyjafjörður (meaning "Island Fjord") is the longest fjord in Northern Iceland, stretching approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) from its mouth in the Arctic Circle down to the town of Akureyri at its head. This magnificent fjord is characterized by its deep blue waters, dramatic mountains on either side, and fertile valleys. It is a vital artery for trade and travel in Northern Iceland and is particularly renowned as one of the best places in Iceland, and indeed Europe, for whale watching, especially for humpback whales. The fjord is home to several charming towns and villages, with Akureyri being the largest and often considered the capital of the North.
Eyjafjörður is a very popular and frequent port of call for cruises exploring Iceland, with ships typically docking in Akureyri at the very head of the fjord. From this strategic position, passengers can easily explore the town itself or embark on excursions to the surrounding natural wonders of Northern Iceland. A visit to Eyjafjörður offers cruise passengers an opportunity to experience a vibrant Icelandic town, witness spectacular whale activity, and discover the diverse landscapes of the country's northern region.
Embark on a dedicated whale watching tour from Akureyri. Eyjafjörður is famous for its high success rate in spotting various whale species, especially humpback whales, as well as minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and porpoises. The sheltered waters of the fjord often provide calm conditions for viewing.
Tip: Many tours depart directly from Akureyri's harbor. Dress warmly in layers, even in summer, as it can get cold on the water.
Wander through Akureyri, often called "the Capital of North Iceland." Visit the distinctive Akureyri Church (Akureyrarkirkja) with its impressive stained glass, stroll along the charming pedestrian street, and explore the Botanical Garden (Lystigarður Akureyrar), one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world.
Tip: Akureyri is very walkable from the cruise pier, making it easy to explore independently.
Take an excursion to Goðafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), one of Iceland's most spectacular and historically significant waterfalls, located about 30 minutes drive from Akureyri. It's famous for its horseshoe shape and the legend of the chieftain who cast his pagan idols into its waters when Iceland converted to Christianity.
Tip: The waterfall is easily accessible with good viewing platforms. Combine this with a visit to Lake Mývatn if time allows.
Embark on a longer excursion to the geological wonders of the Lake Mývatn area. Explore unique volcanic landscapes, including pseudocraters, lava formations (Dimmuborgir), boiling mud pots and steam vents (Námaskarð), and geothermal caves.
Tip: This is a full-day excursion that offers a stark contrast to the coastal scenery. Be prepared for strong sulfur smells in some geothermal areas.
Climb the steps leading up to Akureyri Church (Akureyrarkirkja), prominently situated on a hill overlooking the town. The church itself is architecturally striking, and its elevated position provides excellent panoramic views of Akureyri, the inner part of Eyjafjörður, and the surrounding mountains.
Tip: This viewpoint is easily accessible and offers great photo opportunities without a long excursion.
Spend some time at the Arctic Botanical Garden (Lystigarður Akureyrar), a surprisingly lush and diverse garden that thrives just below the Arctic Circle. It showcases a wide variety of flora, including native Icelandic plants and species from other cold regions.
Tip: It's a peaceful spot for a leisurely walk, especially enjoyable on a nice day, and demonstrates the resilience of plants in northern climates.
