Tip: Look for the many ornate gables and facades that tell tales of Enkhuizen's prosperous past. Don't forget to look for the charming "bottle house" (Flessenhuisje).
See the impressive Drommedaris, Enkhuizen's main defensive tower and gateway, dating back to 1540. It guards the entrance to the picturesque inner harbor, which is often filled with historic sailing ships and pleasure boats.
Tip: The Drommedaris often hosts cultural events or exhibitions. The area around the inner harbor is lively and great for people-watching.
Take a walk along sections of Enkhuizen's old city walls, which still encircle parts of the historic center. These green embankments offer peaceful pathways and provide lovely views over the town and the IJsselmeer.
Tip: This is a great way to get a different perspective of the town's layout and its historical defenses.
Visit the impressive Westerkerk (Western Church), a large Gothic church with a prominent tower that dominates the Enkhuizen skyline. Step inside to admire its historic interior, including its beautiful stained glass and a significant organ.
Tip: Climbing the tower (if open) offers panoramic views of Enkhuizen and the IJsselmeer.
Enjoy the maritime atmosphere at one of the many cafes and restaurants lining the harbor. Sample local Dutch treats, enjoy a coffee, or simply watch the boats come and go. Freshly caught fish is often on the menu.
