A tiny fjord-side village with a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere.

Overview
Djúpavík is an incredibly remote and picturesque hamlet located deep within the Reykjarfjörður fjord, in the wild and rugged Westfjords region of Iceland. Once a thriving herring fishing village in the early 20th century, it is now famous for its vast, iconic, and largely abandoned herring factory, which stands as a haunting monument to Iceland's industrial past amidst dramatic natural beauty. The village itself has only a handful of permanent residents.
Djúpavík is not a port for large, mainstream cruise ships. It is, however, a cherished and unique port of call for small expedition, boutique, and luxury yacht cruises that specialize in remote Icelandic exploration, particularly of the Westfjords. These smaller vessels typically anchor in the fjord and utilize Zodiacs or tenders to bring passengers ashore. A visit to Djúpavík offers cruise passengers a poignant glimpse into Iceland's history, an opportunity to experience profound tranquility, and stunning photographic moments in an almost untouched Arctic landscape.
Next to the factory, the small Hotel Djúpavík has been lovingly restored from a former women's dormitory. It features a cozy restaurant and sometimes a small art gallery showcasing local works, providing a warm and welcoming counterpoint to the factory's industrial scale.
Tip: Even if not staying, you can often pop in for a coffee or to browse the art, supporting the local community.
Behind the factory, a picturesque waterfall, Djúpavíkurfoss, cascades down the cliffs. It's a short, easy walk from the factory, offering another beautiful natural highlight in this serene setting.
Tip: The waterfall adds to the dramatic backdrop of the fjord and the factory; it’s perfect for a quick photo stop.
Take a quiet stroll through the tiny hamlet itself. With only a few houses, it provides a sense of profound isolation and offers unique perspectives on rural Icelandic life in an extremely remote setting.
Tip: Appreciate the silence and tranquility. This is a place to connect with nature's raw beauty and a simpler way of life.

Djúpavík offers truly unique photography opportunities. Capture the imposing herring factory against the backdrop of the fjord, mountains, and waterfall, as well as the subtle colors of the tundra and the changing light.
Tip: The contrast between the decaying industrial structure and the pristine nature is particularly striking.
While the primary focus is the factory, the remote fjord and surrounding cliffs are home to various Arctic bird species. Keep an eye out for seabirds flying over the water or nesting on the cliffs.
Tip: Bring binoculars for better birdwatching opportunities from the ship or ashore.
