Overview
Deshaies is a charming fishing village located on the northwest coast of Basse-Terre, the western wing of Guadeloupe. Unlike the more bustling tourist centers, Deshaies offers a tranquil, authentic Caribbean experience. It's renowned for its beautiful, protected bay, vibrant Creole houses, and lush surrounding hills, famously including the Jardin Botanique de Deshaies. The village also gained international fame as the filming location for the TV series "Death in Paradise."
Deshaies is a popular cruise port of call for smaller cruise ships, luxury yachts, and expedition vessels exploring the Lesser Antilles. Larger ships may anchor further out and tender, but many smaller ships can anchor directly in Deshaies Bay. Passengers are then tendered ashore to the village pier, which provides immediate access to the village's quaint shops, restaurants, and the stunning scenery.
Visit the stunning Jardin Botanique de Deshaies, a former property of comedian Coluche. This magnificent botanical garden features a diverse collection of tropical plants, exotic birds, waterfalls, and panoramic views of the bay.
Tip: Allow at least 2-3 hours to fully explore the garden's extensive pathways and different sections.
Stroll through the picturesque streets of Deshaies village. Admire the colorful Creole houses, browse local artisan shops, and soak in the laid-back Caribbean atmosphere.
Tip: Look for the small, quaint church and the vibrant waterfront area where local fishermen bring in their catch.
Head to Grande Anse Beach, just north of the village. This long, golden-sand beach is considered one of Guadeloupe's most beautiful, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and shaded areas under palm trees.
Tip: There are often local food trucks or small restaurants near the beach for snacks and refreshments.
Enjoy the calm, clear waters of Deshaies Bay. While not a major reef, the bay offers pleasant swimming opportunities directly from the village or from your tender.
Tip: Some tours might offer a short boat trip for snorkeling in nearby coves with more marine life.
For fans of the British TV series "Death in Paradise," many recognizable filming locations are right in the village. Spot Honoré Police Station (the mayor's office), Catherine's Bar (often the local restaurant Le Madras), and the familiar church.
Tip: It's fun to identify the various spots from the show while exploring the village.
Indulge in authentic Creole cuisine at one of Deshaies' waterfront restaurants. Try fresh seafood, local spices, and traditional dishes like accras (fritters) and colombo (curry).
