Wittenberg, Germany Cruise Port

When cruising to Wittenberg, Germany you can expect to gain an exciting new education about the times of Martin Luther in this small city. This northern city that lies along the Elbe River has been around for hundreds of years and has a rich historic story to tell. Wittenberg University was made famous by its former teachers, Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon, both whom were religious reformers. The river harbor and railway junction has led to the industrialization of the area as well as a new rail bridge built in recent years. This town is designed to make walking about the city very easy; it’s a very flat area where most of the historical sites are close together. Below, I have listed a few of our favorite things to see and do when cruising to the port of Wittenberg, Germany along the Elbe River:
  • Visit the famous castle church that Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door, gave some sermons and is now buried at this historic site.
  • Venture into the center of the town where you may catch a Medieval Faire with costumes, music, dancing and plenty of wines and beer.
  • Explore Martin Luther’s Residence, now turned into a museum; you can see some of the original belongings of the family who lived there as well as a few statues in the garden.
  • See Wittenberg University, established during Luther’s time, is still here today with parts of the building dating back to that period and quotes on the walls in remembrance of him.
