Wewak, Papua New Guinea Cruise Port

Wewak is the principal seaport and capital of the East Sepik province in Papua New Guinea. This tropical oasis has a population of 25,000 and welcomes cruise ships along with coastal and international shipping vessels. The town is often a stop on longer cruises that dock along the 15 islands of Papua New Guinea’s coast. A number of ships in the harbor can be rented out for excursions to nearby Kairuru Island which is quite popular due to its stunning waterfalls and relaxing hot springs. Other activities along the mainland include swimming, snorkeling, and diving, as the water is crystal clear, allowing for great views of the maritime life below. The most notable marine creatures include tuna, manta rays, sharks, and turtles. Some divers are also interested in exploring sunken ships that were destroyed during World War II. Wewak was also the location of two war crimes trials in August 1945, just before the war ended.

• Cape Wom is a historic site known as the location where the Japanese 18^th Army officially surrendered to the Australians. Tourists remain drawn to that sacred spot.
   
• Water activities are especially popular in this area with plenty of charter boats available to take travelers anywhere for fishing, parasailing, water skiing, and many other exciting jaunts.
   
• Ecotourism Melanesia involves a number of interesting activities for the modern eco-tourist. This involves trucks and motor canoes traveling vigorously upstream to visit the more secluded villages.
   
• There is also a small memorial between Cape Wom and Wewak proper commemorating the many lives lost during the Second World War.
