Waiheke Island, New Zealand Cruise Port

Waiheke is the second largest and most populated island within New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf. It’s also the most accessible island in the gulf with regular ferry services and a helicopter operation base. Because Waiheke’s climate is ideal for winemaking, the island has 14 vineyards. They also grow olives, many of which are used to produce high-end olive oils. Lauded by travel aficionados Lonely Planet and Conde Nast in the past few years, Waiheke has been named the fifth best destination to visit and the fourth best island in the world, respectively. The beaches are world-renowned, many of which have BBQ facilities for beachside luaus along with other amenities like public restrooms and playgrounds. Along with a community art gallery, the isle has many smaller private galleries run by individuals. Two newspapers—one local and independently owned, the other run by a conglomerate—spread the local, regional, and national news along with the community radio station.

• Wine, dine, and unwind at Obsidian Winery or any of the other 13 dressed-up vineyards on the island. The ideal climate and knowledgeable growers make for a delightful drink.
