Venlo, The Netherlands Cruise Port

Drift along the River Meuse near the German border to find the lovely cruise port of Venlo, The Netherlands. Found within the Limburg province in the southeastern part of the country, Venlo was a trading post as long ago as the 9th century and is one of Holland's oldest cities. Of course, this important position also meant it was a target for marauders; the most impactful siege was led by Dutch soldier Menno van Coehoorn in 1702, which resulted in Venlo becoming part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Today, a mixture of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, paired with shopping and multiple cafés, make this an excellent spot for soaking up history and art. To explore and exercise simultaneously, there are bicycle tours throughout Holland where you can see the sights at a more leisurely pace. Here are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Venlo, The Netherlands:

The Venlo Binnenstad (city center) combines historical buildings with shopping opportunities. The Maasboulevard, built in 2010, expanded the shopping area yet further and takes you along the river; search for everything from clothing to chocolates to wines. There are also many terraces on which you can enjoy the sights and do some people-watching.
Within the marketplace you'll also find Stadhuis, the Renaissance-style town hall that escaped World War II raids relatively untouched. Originally built around 1300, it's undergone several reconstructions and renovations, but still remains a distinctive piece of Dutch architecture.
The fantastic Limburgs Museum is, as its website states, "a journey of discovery through time." Learn about area history from its ancient roots up until the present, featuring permanent displays about the church's influence and fashions though the years; temporary displays appeal to fans of dragons, home cinema, and more.
