Vega, Norway Cruise Port

Within the Norwegian Sea is the island and cruise port of Vega, Norway, with a surrounding archipelago made up of about 6,500 other islands; the main municipality is also called Vega, which comes from the Norse "veig," meaning "liquid." Indeed, there are marshes and lakes all over the island, so it's quite easy to see where the name originated. One of UNESCO’s world heritage sites, Vega gained this status thanks to generations of fishermen and farmers and their unique interaction with the local eider ducks (which have created a great supply of eggs and down throughout the years). One of the oldest inhabited places in northern Norway, proof of human life here extends back at least 10,000 years. The economy hasn't changed much since its inception, with agriculture and fishing still the primary sources of income. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Vega, Norway:

  • For more about the long-term relationship between humans and eider ducks, visit the small museum called E-huset. Within this charming former trading post, you'll learn how the ducks were originally pets, who would return at the end of every winter to their "home" nesting box.

  • Explore the other islands within the Vega archipelago by guided boat tour. Just south of the Arctic Circle, you'll get to see unique wildlife – including more than 230 bird species. Stop at Nes to visit the World Heritage Exhibition and Lånan Exhibition and visit the historic wooden Vega Church in Gladstad, just a few of the many sites in the islands.

  • Thrill-seekers can climb the mountain called Trollvasstinden. While there’s a trail, it's designed for those in good physical condition. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the thousands of islands below. Visit during the period of midnight sun for colors you've only imagined to be possible.

  • Anyone who loves fishing will find this an excellent spot to land huge halibut. You can get a relatively inexpensive fishing license locally; either go out on your own or take a guided tour to find the best catches.
